A highly motivated, organised, flexible and enthusiastic individual is required to undertake research into the rural cancer patient experience in Mid Wales, and support the research work and development of Rural Health and Care Wales (RHCW).
The role will involve researching the cancer patient experience in rural areas of Wales, with a focus on Ceredigion, Powys and Gwynedd. This is a Macmillan Cancer Research funded project that will be considering any health inequalities that may exist for patients in rural areas, with widespread potential interest.
Main duties of the job
The role of the Macmillan Rural Cancer Experience Researcher (MRCER) will involve:
- exploring any differences that people living in urban and rural areas may encounter before, during and after a cancer diagnosis
- gaining a clear understanding of any inequalities (if any) facing people living in rural areas in receiving care and support after they receive a cancer diagnosis
- exploring different ways in which care and support is provided to people with cancer living in rural areas (international scoping) and identify areas of best practice
- researching the experience of professionals delivering cancer support services in both urban and rural areas, in order to ascertain whether any differences or difficulties exist
- providing recommendations on how to improve the care and support provided to people living in rural areas who receive a cancer diagnosis, in order that patient experiences are improved

The post holder will have lead responsibility for the research required by the MRCER, which will include a literature review (international) of patient experience in both urban and rural areas; desk-top exploration of current and planned future support provision for cancer patients in rural Mid Wales (Ceredigion, north Powys and Gwynedd); one-to-one interviews and focus group discussions; compilation of rural cancer patient experience case studies; writing up reports and findings, all whilst working to an approved project plan.
Rural Health and Care Wales is funded by the three health boards working across Mid Wales - Hywel Dda University Health Board, Powys Teaching Health Board and Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board - reporting to the Mid Wales Joint Committee for Health and Care. Its main aims are to research and identify any issues affecting the delivery of health and care in rural areas of Wales, also piloting innovative new models of delivery and participating in consultations and conversations on matters of relevance.
