Consultant Physician in General Medicine with an interest Gastroenterology
Base: Withybush General Hospital, Haverfordwest
Salary: £86,063 - £111,732 per annum
To provide, with consultant colleagues (as appropriate) a service in General Medicine and support the development of sub-speciality interest to the hospital and community so designated with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness.
All clinical staff are accountable and responsible for their own clinical competence and should limit their actions to those for which they are deemed competent. Clinical staff are also required to comply with the requirements of their professional organisation regarding supervision.
You would work primarily in the acute secondary care setting supporting the innovative and exciting work occurring outside the acute hospital. You would also take part in the acute medical in-patient service for all adult age groups and be part of the General Medical on-call rota 1:12
Main duties of the job
The post holder will have joint responsibility for Ward 7 which is a Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine Ward with up to 26 beds. This will be by a consultant of the week model with ward responsibility alternating on a fortnightly or more basis.
When the consultant does not have ward responsibility there will be increased clinic and endoscopy sessions.
Ward 7 is supported by a consultant geriatrician one session a week to support MDT meeting and review of patients with frailty issues.
The post holder if they have the appropriate endoscopy skillset may opt to do the upper GI bleed on call rota based at WWGH in place of the GIM on call in Withybush or do a slot share (i.e 1 in 24 GIM on call) this is negotiable

The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the maintenance of standards for JAG accreditation and develop a subspecialty interest.
The Endoscopy Unit is JAG accredited and has Magnetic scope guides in both rooms along with CO2 insufflators and availability of NBI and Olympus scopes. Entonox is also in routine use.
There is also a good track record of training trainees in Endoscopy.
There are 4 Bowel Screening Colonoscopists within the Health Board and scope for further expansion.
The Health Board has lowest waiting times and is helping other Health Board with Bowel Screening workload. There is close working with colorectal teams and regular Joint IBD & Biologics meetings. CNS in IBD supports the IBD workload. There is an established and experienced CNS network for BBV and Nutrition team and you will be encouraged to take on clinical support and development.
You will contribute to the existing Clinical Trial Program with the shared support of a Clinical Trials Nurse.
An understanding of health informatics and enthusiasm to apply this within an evolving environment of healthcare within a West Wales Healthcare environment is desirable.
You will take advantage of established videoconferencing facilities to develop clinical networks with colleagues across Hywel Dda University Health Board
The appointee will have clinical and supporting clinical activity responsibilities according to the Welsh Assembly Government agreed pattern of weekly working for a Consultant under the new consultant contract. There will be seven direct clinical sessions, and three supporting professional activity (SPA) sessions including an on call commitment
