Job Title: Consultant in General Medicine with an interest in Gastroenterology

Hours: 37.5 hours per week / 10 sessions

This is a new post and you will join colleagues in a very dynamic and forward looking Gastroenterology team.

It is anticipated that the appointment of a fourth GI physician into the Carmarthenshire team will allow subspecialisation and concentration of expertise within the County.

The post will be based at the Prince Philip site and General Medical responsibilities will be based there on a ward based 1:11 system. With regards to the GI component, a County approach is anticipated with the successful applicant moving forward on IBD care within Carmarthenshire with establishment of a modern integrated IBD service focussing on patient centred care.

It is anticipated that an IBD sub specialised interest will be delivered on both hospital sites in Carmarthenshire.

It is anticipated that the successful applicant will establish specialised clinics, joint clinics, outreach and nurse supported services. In addition the applicant will establish networks of care aimed at achieving the expectations of the IBD Standards.

Main duties of the job

To provide, with consultant colleagues (as appropriate) a service in medial and GI services and supporting the development of sub-speciality interest to the hospitals and community so designated with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness.

The Gastroenterology Department is going through an exciting transition currently and the new appointee will be key to this development. The areas of interest that will be developed include Hepatology, alcohol liaison service, nutrition, advanced endoscopy, bowel screening and IBD.

With the 4 gastroenterologists in post, working cross-site, subspecialty interests will be encouraged to enhance the service. Future aspirations will be to look towards a Hywel Dda Gastroenterology Service.

The anticipated number of outpatients is 5-8 new patients or 12-24 follow-up patients or a combination thereof for each outpatient session, depending on support staff.

Acute medical intakes will be on a 1:11 basis and junior doctor support is provided by the team of 2 FP1/FP2, 1 CT1, 1 CT2, and 1 SpR.

The X-ray department has full CT, MRI, ultrasound and angiographic facilities including a day ward area for the admission and recovery of angiography patients. Cardioversions and pacing are carried out in a dedicated room on the cardiac care unit
