We are looking to recruit a motivated Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery with an interest in lower limb arthroplasty surgery for this replacement post, joining colleagues in a dynamic and highly supportive Trauma and Orthopaedic Department. The role of the Consultant is intended to be as an equal senior to other Consultants within theA job plan review will be undertaken within the first 3 to 6 months of the post commencing.

Applicants must be capable of dealing with Paediatric Orthopaedic emergencies. They must also be a fully registered medical practitioner with the GMC.

Main duties of the job

Clinical staff are also required to comply with the requirements of their professional organisation regarding supervision. Integral to the responsibilities of the post are the following requirements:-

To ensure the provision and delivery of a first class clinical service, To provide effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty, To sustain and develop teaching and research wherever appropriate, To undertake all work in accordance with the Health Board's procedures and operating policies, To conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Health Board's service plans, To maintain the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty or the Health Board Core clinical expertise in Trauma & Orthopaedics.

Experience and knowledge of running and further developing a general orthopaedic and trauma service with a further interest in Foot & Ankle surgery

Commitment to deliver care in an innovative manner with multidisciplinary working, virtual clinics, remote follow ups and same day dischargeLeadership and team building skills as well as working as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Your principal places of employment will be at Withybush General Hospital (WGH), Haverfordwest, where you will undertake your elective workload to include clinics and theatre lists.

The successful candidate may be requested to work flexibly and backfill available theatre and clinic sessions at all 4 sites across the Health Board.

On call cover at the WGH site for the successful candidates patients is provided by a 3 tier on call system comprising of Consultant, Middle Grade and SHO who have responsibility for all patients on the site. On call commitment is dedicated to trauma provision with cancellation of all elective activity during on call periods

We are looking for a motivated, colleague committed to providing a high quality service. The successful candidate would join a culturally varied department with a strong work ethos and determination to improve and maintain standards of care.

The successful candidate needs to be comfortable with consultant led and delivered general trauma provision in a district general hospital on a 1 in 5 rota providing prospective cover. The provision of on call cover at the WGH site is currently essential, however is under review as part of the HB Intermediate term plan (IMTP) for the provision of trauma and elective services across the HB.

All consultants (including the successful post holder) provide on call cover during an on call week where all other clinical activity is cancelled.The on call week commences at 5pm on a Wednesday with a handover from the outgoing on call consultant and this will last until 5pm the following Wednesday.

Monday to Friday, the post holder will be expected to lead the Trauma meeting each morning to review all admissions overnight and review all actions taken by supporting on call staff and identify patients for theatre that day, communicating with all relevant parties. The post holder will then lead the multi-disciplinary Board Round to review all admitted patients, followed by a Ward Round. In the afternoon, the post holder will supervise the dedicated trauma theatre session. NCEPOD theatre sessions run daily, (7 days per week), and it is the post holders responsibility to take part in daily discussions on how this can be utilised to address trauma case load.At weekends, the post holder will be expected to undertake a morning ward round to review all patients admitted under their care and review those patients belonging to other Orthopaedic consultants for whom concerns may have been raised by on call or nursing staff. Any patients requiring surgery will need to be identified and discussed with the on call theatre team.The post holder is non-resident but is expected to live within a 30 minute drive of the hospital to attend should this be required.

The successful candidate will be expected to work within and assist with the further development of an inter-health board network to improve care for all patients within the UHB. The successful candidate will be expected to take responsibility for the development and training of junior doctors within the department and to develop his own sub speciality interest within the speciality of foot and ankle surgery to complement the existing interests of the department and HB as a whole.

The post holder will be expected to have received training in and be competent in the management of common non specialised paediatric conditions and to join colleagues from the HB in taking part in the National working groups in both paediatric and adult elective orthopaedic services.

Elective in patient operating is currently provided at the WGH site, however this is under review as part of the HB IMTP. Patients undergoing elective surgery under the consultants care at other sites will remain under the care of the post holder, but with provision for consultant and junior doctor level cover at the remote site according to the needs of the service and clinical safety requirements.

The post holder will be invited to a job plan review in the event of any re-configuration of services and be entitled to travel time between sites as deemed necessary.
