Job summary

We are delighted to be recruiting a consultant midwife to join the maternity team in Powys.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a unique service that provides midwifery care in the community, with 6 free standing midwifery units, all with water birth facilities. There are no obstetric services provided in Powys and these services are commissioned from Health Boards and NHS Trusts surrounding the borders. The consultant midwife plays a pivotal role in ensuring that care for all women is safe and ensures choice.We are looking for an experienced midwife who will be a visible leader and can evidence excellent multidisciplinary team working. Through being a positive role model the consultant midwife will use their midwifery expertise to ensure safe pathways of care for all women who use the maternity service in Powys and to ensure the service listens to the experiences of the families who use the service. A key part of the role will be in supporting the delivery of our continuous improvement plan, working with key stakeholders and ensuring innovation and best practice standards. This role also involves maintaining effective working relationships with obstetric and midwifery services within the 8 commissioned services that we work with.The role offers opportunity to be involved in work on an all-Wales basis and to be part of the consultant midwives network both in Wales and across the UK.

This role is being offered as a secondment due to the needs of the service. Please ensure line management agreement is in place before applying. We will consider part time and job share options. We welcome informal visits to explore the role further.

Qualifications and/or Knowledge

Essential

  • Registered Midwife
  • Masters degree in relevant subject
  • Post Graduate Certificate in Education or relevant teaching experience
  • Amenable to future working at Doctorate level (PhD/Professional doctorate)
  • Demonstrate a broad but indepth knowledge of health policy in relation to midwifery practice, with reference to normality and public health agendas
  • Detailed knowledge of midwifery issues and their impact on service delivery

Desirable

  • Accredited Counselling course or experience in providing support in complex / traumatic circumstances
  • Completed PhD or Professional Doctorate

Experience

  • Significant experience in clinical midwifery practice, including responsibility for organising specialist care and advice for complex aspects of pregnancy
  • Evidence of managing a clinical area, leading elements of service provision and of supporting staff development in the clinical environment
