Job summary
Applications are invited for this post based at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd. This post joins eight other full-time Consultant Cardiologists. The department has an ethos of strong teamwork through which each consultant takes ownership of their patients but seeks specialist advice from within the team or externally whenever they require. They also work closely with the Allied Health Professionals at each stage of the Patient Pathway. The post holder will therefore share in general cardiology inpatient and outpatient care and will participate in the non-interventional acute cardiology rota.
Although the department is part of the Acute Medical Directorate the cardiologists have no commitment to general medicine.
The post is based at the North Wales Cardiac Centre (NWCC) at Glan Clwyd Hospital which has responsibilities for patients across the Health Board. It is staffed by consultant cardiologists based in all three District General Hospitals along with consultants from radiology providing cardiac intervention and imaging. This post will be based at Glan Clwyd Hospital.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.
Main duties of the job
- Diagnose and treat cardiovascular conditionsusing minimally invasive, catheter-based procedures such as angioplasty, stent placement, and cardiac catheterization
- Perform emergency interventionsfor acute cardiac events like heart attacks, including procedures to restore blood flow and stabilize patients in critical condition
- Interpret advanced cardiac imaging and diagnostics, including intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), optical coherence tomography (OCT), and pressure wire assessments to guide treatment decisions
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teamsto manage complex cases, provide follow-up care, and determine when surgical intervention or ongoing medical therapy is needed
Provide a general inpatient and outpatient cardiology service supported by other members of the department.
In addition, the post holder will contribute to
- Invasive cardiology on-call
- Additional subspecialist roles according to their qualifications and the needs of service
- Local and regional cardiology service management
- Professional supervision and teaching of junior medical staff.
- Contributions to local undergraduate and postgraduate activity.
- Participation in clinical audit, continuing professional development and clinical governance activities on a local, Health Board and All Wales basis.
- Development of research and professional interests.
