Job summary

We are pleased to offer an opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated Midwife to join our team on Delivery Suite as a Shift Coordinator, based at Wrexham Maelor. This autonomous practitioner will take responsibility for the coordination of care within the Delivery Suite.

You will be responsible for the assessment, planning and implementation of care to both high and low risk women in both the antenatal and intrapartum and occasionally the postnatal period. You will provide clinical leadership at ward level, thus ensuring that the highest standards of clinical care are continuously achieved and monitored. You will participate in the management of Delivery Suite including the supervision/mentorship of learners, supporting and leading a team of staff in the delivery of evidence based client centred care. You will be responsible for ensuring that all care is delivered according to Health Board policies and procedures maintaining associated records. Utilising clinical audit, research, supervision, practice and teaching you will monitor and improve standards of care by efficient and effective use of resources.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Main duties of the job

  • To ensure the day to day supervision, allocation and coordination of staff with appropriate recognition of skill mix and ability.
  • To supervise, advise and support medical staff and complete their appraisals as requested.
  • To foster effective communication systems between staff of all disciplines in order that a positive working environment is achieved.
  • To recognise, communicate and reward the achievements of the team and the individuals of the team.
  • To identify and report any poor performance issues.
  • To take responsibility for the management of resources in the ward area, identifying and addressing any issues which affect learning, development, performance and clinical care.
  • To report all incidents and accidents via the Trust and Maternity Unit risk management systems.
  • Participate in the unit bleep holder rota assuming responsibility on a shift by shift basis for the maternity and gynaecology services.
  • Ensure the ward environment is safe, clean and tidy, and that the Health & Safety Policy is adhered to at all times.
  • To take overall responsibility for ensuring appropriate skill mix in the ward environment including completion of the duty rota for Labour Ward staff.
  • To take responsibility for the professional well-being of staff allocated to work on Labour Ward by being available and willing to discuss openly any problems/dilemmas.
  • To diffuse challenging behaviour and act as a role model to ensure that all potentially difficult situations are managed in a sensitive manner.
