Job summary

Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB) seek to appoint locum consultant gastroenterologists to Glan Clwyd Hospital. The recruitment is both for replacement and expansion of the department to support specialist areas (particularly ERCP, hepatology and nutrition) and the introduction of a formal out of hours networked gastrointestinal bleed service. They will join a team of two consultant gastroenterologists (including one locum at present), 1 StR, 1 Clinical Fellow, 2 IMT or equivalent, 1 FY2 and 2 FY1. The department of medicine provides ward based care, the gastroenterology firm based on ward 9 which was refurbished as part of the hospital redevelopment programme.

The post holder will share inpatient and outpatient general gastroenterology workload. Currently there is no formal on site out of hours endoscopy service, but the Health Board is developing a service which the post holders will be expected to participate in subject to further negotiation once the framework of this service is established. It is agreed that the post holders will not participate in the general medical on call, although this is available should the candidate wish to do so. The department would provide an in reach service to optimise patient management and discharge from the acute medical unit. This will be a weekday service, extending to a weekend service on the introduction of a formal out of hours GI bleed rota.

Main duties of the job

Provide, with Consultant colleagues, a service in the speciality of Gastroenterology and General Medicine with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness. Be responsible for patients admitted to a 24 bedded ward shared with the other gastroenterologists. There will be a twinned system for ward reviews to allow cover for leave. Provide specialty in reach during the week. Participation in the general medical on call is not expected, although this is available if the post holder wishes to do so. Medical admissions to Glan Clwyd are assessed in the Acute Medical Unit in the newly developed Emergency Quadrant. The take averages approximately 30-40 admissions, though speciality in reach reduces the post take ward round work. The GIM on call comprises of three ward rounds during 24 hours and the in reach will support the morning round in the shape of a gastroenterologist of the morning with responsibility to assess overnight GI bleeds, perform endoscopy on GI bleeds in the emergency morning slot, see referrals (or delegate appropriately), review new and unwell patients on ward 9.
