This post is fixed term for 10 months to meet the needs of the service.
We are looking for a band 6 Occupational Therapist, with experience of Older Person Mental Health (OPMH) and post diagnostic support for dementia, to join the team in the developing Crisis Prevention and Support service.
The successful applicant will deliver client centred and specialist, occupationally focused assessments and interventions to older people with mental illness as part of the older person's Occupational Therapy pathway.
The service provides early assessment and intervention to help prevent or avert crises associated with OPMH issues and cognitive deficit. The role will include; detailed liaison with and education of care providers, including families and care homes; holistic assessment of strengths and needs, supports, and the environmental context; and risk based occupational formulation with a view to identifying appropriate services, supports and strategies. In addition, the Occupational Therapists will provide preventative interventions, through post diagnostic support where this is required, in order to embed coping, self-management strategies and supports to prevent crises occurring. The Occupational Therapists will focus on development of strategies, skills, habits and routines to enable service users to live well with their condition and foster functional independence.
Main duties of the job
The OPMH crisis prevention support Occupational Therapy service may in the future provide some weekend cover across a 7-day week, acting within a spectrum of OPMH services. The successful candidates will create processes and pathways to compliment the Occupational Therapy provision within primary care, the general hospital home first and D2RA teams, psychiatric liaison, memory assessment services, OPMH community teams and inpatient units. You will be a team player and be committed to excellence in seeking the most robust models of intervention to enhance functional independence and quality of life. You will be responsible for supervision and development of junior staff and be required to take Occupational Therapy students on practice education placements.
We offer a proactive, BCUHB wide, mental health Occupational Therapy team who work together to develop clinical skills and effectiveness across the older persons mental health Occupational Therapy pathway. We seek to expand the mental health Occupational Therapy provision across all three areas of BCUHB by evaluating service provision, developing business cases and running pilots. The Occupational Therapy service is committed to 'lifelong learning' and evidenced based practice. All staff receive support and encouragement to utilise continuing professional development (CPD) and to maintain a CPD portfolio.
