Job summary
Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board wishes to appoint a Consultant Surgeon with expertise in General, GI and Day Case Surgery to join a busy Department of Surgery based at Ysbyty Gwynedd and Llandudno General Hospital. The post holder will also be expected to join Bowel Screening Wales program and perfrom advanced therapeutic Colonoscopy.
In conjunction with the existing General Surgeons and hard working, highly motivated dedicated team of medical and nursing staff, the successful appointee will be expected to provide a high-quality emergency service.
The post holder will be expected to participate in Lower GI MDT and accept referrals for patients requiring advanced colonoscopy procedures like EMRs. In Ysbyty Gwynedd on-call acute general surgery is provided only by GI/General Surgeons on 1 in 8 basis. The post holder will be expected to be part of this rota. The post holder will have a contract of 10 sessions.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.
Main duties of the job
The new post-holder will work as part of a team of general / colorectal surgeons with complementary interests and shared responsibilities. Around 210 new cases of colorectal cancer are diagnosed per year in this unit. The cancer waiting time targets have to be met whilst ensuring high quality care. Modern developments including laparoscopic colorectal surgery and enhanced recovery will be encouraged. The department follows NICE guidelines and colorectal cancer data is submitted to the NBOCAP (National Bowel Cancer Audit Project). Cancer Services in North Wales are coordinated by the North Wales Cancer Network.
Ysbyty Gwynedd endoscopy services actively enrol patients from the Bowel Screening Wales Program. There is higher demand for procedures like Screening Colonoscopy and Endoscopic Mucosal Resections due to changes in the recruitment age of the population in Wales. The appointee will be expected to support endoscopy services in delivering these procedure
Services for management of gynaecological cancer requiring complex pelvic resection have been centralised to Ysbyty Gwynedd. The post holder will be expected to join a team of highly skilled Onco-surgeons for performing complex pelvic resection.
The post holder will be expected to take some sessions in Llandudno Hospital where s/he would be expected to perform day case surgery.
