Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a Deputy Head of Health and Safety to join our Corporate Health and Safety team. The post holder will be an experienced, compassionate, caring, dynamic and effective leader within the Health Board and specifically the Corporate Health, Safety and Security Team. They will deputise for the Head of Health, Safety and Security and bring significant additional relevant expertise from a large and complex organisationinto the team.

Main duties of the job

The Deputy Head of Health & Safety will provide expert advice, guidance and leadership at a corporate level on health & safety issues to the Board. In partnership with the Head of Health, Safety and Security the post holder will monitor the Health Board's compliance with the requirements of relevant Health & Safety related legislation, Welsh Assembly policy and guidance specifically related to the management of Health & Safety.

The Deputy Head of Health & Safety will support the development, implementation and management of all relevant Policies, Procedures, Protocols and Guidelines in relation to the management of Health & Safety. The post holder will provide specialist advice and guidance in respect of the development of Health & Safety arrangements at both a strategic and operational level.

The Deputy Head of Health & Safety will support the development of the BCU HB risk profile in respect of the Health & Safety risk profile, working closely with all clinical and non-clinical services and corporate functions to ensure that the risk profile is reflective of operational and organisational Health & Safety risks. The post holder will also work closely with staff, Managers, staff side representatives and Risk Managers to ensure that BCU HB's incident reporting system is used effectively and monitored appropriately.

  • Post Grad diploma/ BSc/ NEBOSH diploma
  • Educated to higher degree level (e.g. Masters) or demonstrable equivalent experience in a complex healthcare environment
  • Evidence of recent and relevant continuous professional development
  • Training qualification or extensive equivalent experience of developing and delivering health and safety / non clinical risk training

  • Significant experience of line management of a large multi-disciplinary team
  • Experience of working in a senior health and safety role
  • Experience of undertaking complex accident investigations and providing recommendations on findings
  • Experience in undertaking detailed risk assessments
