We have an exciting opportunity for a Dietitian to join the health care team based at HMP Berwyn in North Wales. This role has been expanded and would suit an experienced Band 5 or a Band 6 looking for a new challenge. Dietetics in the prison setting is a specialist role working with people who have attracted a prison sentence. The client group includes the full range of nutrition related conditions including obesity, diabetes, nutrition support, allergies and gastroenterology. The caseload is stimulating and complex, with no two days being the same. Support for more complex cases will be available from the Specialist Dietitians based at Wrexham Maelor Hospital

HMP Berwyn is a category C male training prison with a remand facility. At capacity, there is space for 2106 men. HMP Berwyn is a setting that has a strong rehabilitative culture. We have a comprehensive health and wellbeing team which includes a range of professionals offering an array of interventions to our patients. You will also be able to access the Dietetic department based at Wrexham Maelor Hospital, a department of over 50 Dietitians and Dietetic Assistants, supported by an admin team. The Dietetic department in North Wales takes professional development seriously and you will have the opportunity to take part in relevant Continuous Professional Development activities both internally and externally.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a Dietitian who is keen to work in this fast paced environment as part of a multidisciplinary team. You will:

  • See men in a clinic setting and manage your own waiting lists
  • Have a regular community outpatient clinic in the outside health community and be a full part of the dietetic clinical community team.
  • Develop weight management groups - which may be run on an ongoing basis by the postholder or a Therapy Assistant with appropriate supervision by the postholder.
  • Scope the possibility of group education for men with Diabetes
  • Work with the catering team to meet the nutritional needs of men on special diets
  • Write, monitor and update relevant processes, pathways and guidelines
  • Train other members of the healthcare team as necessary.
  • Be involved in service improvement
  • Have the opportunity to engage in research
  • Undertake duties which are new to Dietetics and unique to the prison setting (full training will be given)
