Job summary

BCUHB wishes to appoint an enthusiastic Urology surgeon to join our department and current team of 4 consultants in providing a high quality surgical service in North Wales.

This is a ten session post for a period of 12 months to bolster the capacity available in the department.

Main duties of the job

DUTIES:

  • To carry out duties within the Department of Urology within the Health Board based at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd.

  • To be responsible for running the day to day activity of the Department and providing advice and consultation on referral from other Departments as required.

  • To participate in a 1:4 non-prospective on-call rota

  • To participate in the teaching and adequate supervision of the staff and junior doctors of the Hospital and medical students as required.

  • To participate as required in the clinical audit process operated within the specialty group, improving clinical practice by peer review and changing working practices to maintain a high standard of medical treatment and care.
  • Participate and co-operate with the Lead Consultant in the effective management of the specialty group and its resources.

Main duties will be at Glan Clwyd Hospital, with sessions in other locations in the area as required.

About us

The Department of Urology at Glan Clwyd currently have three full-time urological surgeons, a Locum Consultant Urologist along with 5 middle grade registrar level training including 1 SpR from the Mersey Deanery training programme. There are two SHO level staff and one FY1 and FY2. The Department has recently undergone a refurbishment, to provide daycase urology and therapeutic services to include TRUS-Guided prostate biopsy lists, an endoscopy suite, dedicated lithotripsy sessions and specialist out-patient clinics. This facility also houses the one-stop urgent suspected cancer clinics and is used for nurse led flow clinics, catheter change clinics as well as continence and andrology clinics. Urodynamic facilities are available within the department. The Urology Department has inpatient beds based on the 3rd floor within the Surgical Department. Paediatric beds are also available on the main hospital site.

The Urology department uses one of the two dedicated purpose built modern integrated laparoscopic surgery theatres for its heavy laparoscopic workload. Currently, major laparoscopic Nephrectomies and prostatectomies are performed in this OR. The theatres also benefit from built in facilities and equipment for Holmium laser, stone and KTP laser prostate surgery and template guided saturation prostate biopsies.

  • GMC Registered (Full)
  • FRCS Urology or equivalent.

Desirable

  • Higher postgraduate degree (MD or PhD)
  • Relevant peer reviewed publications
  • Advanced Life Support Qualification.

Experience

Essential

  • Experience in Stone and Core Urology

Desirable

  • Evidence of logical thinking and a practical approach to style of working.
  • Show an understanding of the development needs of trainees and how these can be met.
  • Laparoscopic Nephrectomy experience

Training

  • In all aspects of Urology.

  • Knowledge of a range of educational methods.
