Job summary
The BETSI CADWALADR UNIVERSITY HEALTH BOARD is responsible for the provision of both primary and secondary health care across North Wales. The main acute hospital of Central Division is Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, the Ophthalmic Unit is based at Abergele Hospital.
Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board is the largest health organisation in Wales, providing a full range of primary, community, mental health and acute hospital services for a population of around 676,000 people across the six counties of North Wales (Anglesey, Gwynedd, Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire and Wrexham) as well as some parts of mid Wales, Cheshire and Shropshire.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate must be close to completing their training programme or have already obtained CCT. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will have a high level of expertise in phacoemulsification and should be able to perform cataract surgery without supervision. Abilty to perform glaucoma surgery ( including trabeculectomy, viscocanalostomy and drainage implant surgery independently is desirable . There will be one independent Glaucoma theatre session every week .
About us
Stanley Eye Unit is a well established ophthalmic unit located in a separate site six miles from the main hospital. It has an extremely well equipped out-patient department with slit lamp connected digital video, ultrasound machines for A and B scan, OCT, corneal topographer and pachymetry, ocular blood flow equipment, Pascal, Argon and YAG lasers. In addition there are facilities for digital FFA.The unit is in the process of acquiring an SLT machine. The unit provides a comprehensive vitreo-retinal service for the whole of North Wales. The department has a new digital imaging facility which is now being developed into a total clinical care system. Internet access is available from each office and consulting room. The clinic also has areas dedicated to IVT provision.
Medical staff comprises eight full time Consultants and 1 part time Consultant, two Associate Specialists, five Staff Doctors, four Specialty Trainees and one part time Clinical Assistant.

The programme also includes staff clinical conferences, tutorials, discussion and journal club meetings and symposiums and films on medical and allied matters. A comprehensive and up to date medical library has been developed together with a first class inter-library exchange system.
