CONSULTANT PHYSICIAN WITH AN INTEREST IN GERIATRIC MEDICINE

Job summary

We are excited to be looking for a new colleague to join our expanding team of substantive consultants based at Wrexham Maelor Hospital. The post is a new addition to the current team of eleven consultants currently working in the East area of the Health Board. The post has arisen from plans to reconfigure and strengthen our existing services. In particular, we are seeking to strengthen our already well-developed services in general geriatrics and rehabilitation.

We are keen to embrace new models of working and innovation. To that end in the last two years we have welcomed one consultant on an annualized contract, another two on less than full time contracts, as well as the introduction of our three consultant therapist colleagues to the department.

Whilst we have expanded staffing significantly recently we are in the middle of a business case process to allow us further funded consultant posts. This is with the aim to future proof our consultant workforce in view of the ageing population.

Main duties of the job

In contrast to English job plans, those in Wales come with 3 supporting professional activities (SPA) sessions as standard (2 SPAs for revalidation), though the 3rd SPA (for teaching, training, research, clinical governance and service development) will need to be justified at subsequent annual job plan reviews. A 10 sessions job plan therefore comes with 7 direct clinical care (DCC) sessions as standard in Wales. A session is 3-4 hours with an average of 3.75 hours over the working week, as opposed to the English 4-hour programmed activities (PA).

There is substantial scope to individualise a job plan depending on a successful candidates interests, the below job plan is the initial starting point for discussion.

There is the possibility of alternating between a month on the acute frailty team, and a month covering the below job plan for interested candidates.
