Job summary
The candidate will be responsible, both professionally and managerially, to Dr H Nair.
He/she will:
- Provide support to Consultant and Associate Specialist, in managing the department in-patients and out-patients (ambulatory patients)
- Provide leadership and education to the junior doctors on the team.
- Provide On Call as a Middle Grade.
- Contribute to local postgraduate activity.
- Participate in Clinical Audit and CPD, which is fully supported by the Health Board.
- Participate in research projects as necessary.
Shared Office accommodation and access to intranet/internet will be provided.
Main duties of the job
Each resident on-call team consists of a pre-registration Foundation Year One (FY1), three SHO/FY2s and a Specialist Registrar
The average daily emergency "take" in Adult Medicine is 25 patients (+15 for Care of the Elderly) and the average length of stay of < 4-5 days. Consultant post-take ward rounds are carried out at 0800, 1400 and 1800 in the Acute Medicine Unit. There are over 6,000 emergency admissions each year to Adult Medicine, with a further 4,000 annual admissions to Care of the Elderly.
The Division of Emergency and Integrated Medicine has twice-weekly sessions of postgraduate and audit activity, including a weekly Physicians' Grand Round. There is also a weekly lunchtime Clinical Conference. The Division has a regular teaching commitment with resident students from Cardiff, Manchester and Liverpool, with the majority of appointed from these Universities. A core curriculum is taught to Foundation Year Ones and SHOs/FY2's, and there are also regular MRCP tutorials. There is a dedicated Clinical Governance Unit and Audit Office with permanent staff.
About us
Glan Clwyd Hospital opened in 1980 and is a modern District General Hospital providing a comprehensive range of services to the population of North Wales, between Llandudno and Flint and the adjacent inland rural communities. It serves a population of approximately 220,000 with a considerable influx of holidaymakers in the summer months. There are 513 acute hospital beds on the Glan Clwyd site. There are additional in-patient beds at H.M. Stanley Hospital, St. Asaph (Ophthalmology Department and Stroke Rehabilitation Unit) and at Abergele Hospital (Orthopaedic). An Acute Psychiatric Unit (Ablett Unit) is located on the Glan Clwyd site, as is the North Wales Cancer Treatment Centre, which provides care for the North Wales population.
The Division of Emergency and Integrated Medicine includes three medical wards, including an 8-bedded Cardiac Care Unit, a 30 bedded Acute Medicine Unit and three Care of the Elderly wards. There is also a busy Emergency Department, a Gastroenterology Unit and a Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory within the Division. The Renal and Diabetes Centre opened in September 2004.
