Job summary
The Department of Urology at Wrexham Maelor Hospital is one of three DGH urology units in North Wales coming under the overall umbrella of the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. The Wrexham Unit consists of four Consultant Urologists with individual subspeciality interests: Prof. Iqbal Shergill , Mr Christian Seipp , Mr Basharat Jameel , Mr Mohamed Yehia and Mr Chirag Patel. Inpatient urology cases are based on a 16-bed ward directly adjacent to the Surgical Assessment Unit. Outpatient facilities are in a modern department providing rooms for consultation, prostatic biopsies, flexible cystoscopy, intravesical Botox therapy and ultrasound imaging. All surgery is undertaken in a designated urological theatre equipped for almost all types of modern urology, including Holmium laser surgery, flexible ureterorenoscopy, PCNL and mini-PCNL, transurethral resection in saline, penile and artificial urinary sphincter implants, all treatments for female urinary incontinence, as well as open radical nephrectomy. Day cases are treated in the day case unit within the Maelor hospital. There are full interventional radiology facilities with isotope imaging, CT, MRI and PET scan on site. Apart from CMG and ambulatory urodynamics there are consultant-led videourodynamic sessions with additional capacity for cavernosograms, urethrograms and cystograms.

The Wrexham Maelor Hospital is a district general hospital with 779 beds providing most medical and surgical specialities and accident and emergency facilities. There is a consultant body of 149. All major specialities and sub-specialities are represented with the exception of cardiac surgery, neurosurgery and transplantation. Visiting consultants provide plastic surgery, neurology, neurosurgery and super specialist paediatrics. Visiting consultants from the North Wales Cancer Centre based at Glan Clwyd Hospital near Rhyl provide oncological services.
