Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Clinical / Practitioner Psychologist to join our friendly team. The Family Intervention Team is a partnership service delivered by Action for Children and the ABUHB. We work with children aged 3-16 and their families to help them access timely psychological help to meet emerging needs and to prevent the escalation of their difficulties. We are passionate about the talents and capabilities of children and the opportunities of childhood to build a secure foundation and healthy psychological functioning. We believe that children are often best helped in the context of their families and we work closely with many diverse kinds of families in fulfilling their potential.

The post holder would be joining a thriving psychological service which plays a key role in the Family Intervention Team through leading all clinical practice delivered to families. Alongside being a member of the Family Intervention Team, the post holder would also belong to the ABUHB Child Psychology and Therapies Service in which there is a range of excellent services for children, families and fellow professionals. Many of our qualified Practitioner Psychologists are longstanding within the wider service, and together we offer a supportive peer group and share a rich professional culture in which continued professional development is encouraged.

Fixed Term to 31st March 2026 to meet the needs of the service

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the post include providing direct psychological work with children and families, clinical leading and supervising the psychologically informed practice of the Family Support Practitioners at FIT. Also, leading on audit and research projects to gather evidence about the service and our impacts as well as how our service can continually improve. The role involves developing the co-production activities of our service and raising the voice of children and families.

The post is available as a bands 7 - 8A development post or as an 8A post dependent upon experience. The post is offered fixed term until March 2026 due to fixed term funding at present. We are hopeful that funding will be identified to allow the service and this post to continue in the longer term.

  • Honours degree in Psychology.
  • HCPC Registered.
  • Doctorate in Clinical Psychology accredited by the BPS, or equivalent accredited by the BPS

Desirable

  • Other related academic qualifications
  • IT skills training
  • A post graduate research degree

Experience

Essential

  • Doctorate training across a range of client groups but must include Children.
  • Significant experience of working with children with developmental trauma and attachment difficulties and their families
  • Has completed at least 10 training days per year on courses relevant to the provision of Child and Family Psychology and Therapies Service.

Desirable

  • Post qualification work experience in a relevant clinical or care setting.
  • Post qualification experience of working in Child Psychology specialising in working with children with a developmental trauma / attachment difficulties.
  • To have obtained further experience of working within other Clinical Psychology specialities e.g. Child Services or Learning Disability Services.
