Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for two Full Time Junior Clinical Fellows (Lower Level) in General Surgery. The post will be based at the Grange University Hospital, SE Wales, commencing on 7th August 2024 for a fixed term period of 12 months.

This post is suitable for junior doctors considering or seeking a career in a surgical specialty, and/or those wishing to gain experience in surgery prior to applying to other specialties e.g. radiology or general practice. Many previous post holders have successfully applied to Core Surgical Training posts and other national specialty selection processes. Recent post holders secured their first choice surgical training posts through National Selection. For doctors who are new to working in the NHS/UK, a period of induction without on call commitments may be appropriate, and can be offered

The Department across the Health Board is currently staffed by 17 General Surgery/GI consultants, 4 Vascular and 6 Breast Surgery consultants, 11 Specialty Training registrars, 14 Senior Clinical Fellow/Specialty Doctors, 9 core trainees/CT-level clinical fellows, 3 FY2 doctors and 21 FY1 doctors. There are excellent inter-departmental relationships including with radiology, anaesthetics/ITU, gastroenterology and emergency medicine

Main duties of the job

A named educational supervisor and clinical supervisors will be provided, and training opportunities will be equivalent to those available to our core surgical trainees in general surgery post on the All-Wales core surgical training scheme. There will be opportunities to participate in teaching, research, audit and quality improvement, plus advice and support regarding development of a surgical portfolio and career guidance. This post will be based initially in either upper or lower GI surgery, with potential to gain experience in other sub-specialties as opportunities become available.

Clinically this post includes commitments to emergency and elective general and GI surgery including emergency vascular surgery, as well ongoing inpatient and outpatient care. Team rotas within sub-specialties ensure equal access to training opportunities alongside higher surgical trainees, core surgical trainees and Foundation doctors. Clinical commitments will be primarily in the Grange University Hospital, with elective commitments on other sites within the Health Board, including Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport and Nevill Hall Hospital in Abergavenny. For this reason, post-holders will be expected to travel independently between sites; travel expenses will be reimbursed in line with Health Board policy.
