Job summary
In Surgical High Care, our mission is to provide exemplary care to patients following their elective surgery in a high care environment. Our close nursing ratios enable us to provide care that meets the unique needs of patients post operatively. In Surgical High Care, patients will stay up to 48 hours for continuous monitoring and optimisation prior to returning to their admission surgical ward. We foster collaborative working with the wider multi-disciplinary team to promote enhanced recovery after surgery.
The Clinical Band 6 Nurse is responsible for the delivery of the highest standard of care to postoperative patients from any surgical speciality on the Surgical High Care Unit. This will involve utilising specialist skills, for example, management of arterial lines, ABG interpretation, management of fluid protocols and vasoactive drugs and high flow nasal oxygen delivery.
The Post holder will be expected to contribute to the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of patient care, in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team and in accordance with their Professional Codes of Conduct.
The post holder will also be expected to assume overall responsibility of the unit during a shift, providing clinical leadership to nursing and support staff, to ensure the effective running of the Unit.
They will also act as a mentor and assessor to new staff and students.
Main duties of the job
To assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care using the Nursing Process without direct supervision.
To regularly assume the nursing care for patients with complex pathological deviation requiring multiple therapeutic intervention, analyse of results and respond to treatment protocols
Comply with the safe and effective handling, management and administration of medicines in line with professional standards.
To calculate drug dosages. adjust treatment treatments according to protocols e.g. fluid protocol, metaraminol protocols.
Dexterity and accuracy required for e.g Intravenous injections, syringe pumps, infusions and insertion of catheters.
Ability to maintain infusion protocols and respond to changes in patient's condition.
To participate at ILS level in resuscitation procedures.
To act as a role model to junior staff sharing knowledge and expertise.
Organises own work loads and that of junior staff, plans off duty /rotas for the unit.
Involved in discharge planning, contributing to patent flow, co-ordinating with multi-disciplinary team and other agencies.
To effectively manage an allocated patient caseload delegated by the Team Leader.
To respond appropriately and confidently to the constantly changing condition of the critically ill patient always working within the Scope of Professional Practice laid down by the NMC.
Respond to life threatening situations and initiate appropriate action.
