Job summary
The Older Adult Mental Health Directorate is looking for two enthusiastic arts therapists to play a key role in the development of arts therapy provision within an inpatient psychological therapy service for older adults. Applicants will need to demonstrate an interest in older adult issues and hold current HCPC registration in an arts therapy modality (Art Psychotherapist, Art Therapist, Dramatherapist, and/or Music Therapist)
Main duties of the job
ABUHB have a long-standing commitment to arts therapies and recent funding allows us to provide further investment in this valuable service. The existing service consists of a 0.5 wte Band 7 music therapist based in the borough of Caerphilly. Funding for two additional posts will extend provision to two further boroughs - Newport and Torfaen. The successful post holder will play a key role in the expansion of arts therapies provision within the psychological therapy service to older adults.
Service users present with a variety of diagnostic labels (both dementia and functional mental health) and typically present with complex/long-standing physical, social and psychological needs. Arts therapies provision is currently integrated within existing psychological therapies provision and designed to focus on four key domains:
- The delivery of arts therapies (i.e., direct clinical work with identified individuals and groups of individuals)
- Transition support (i.e., supporting transitions from inpatient to community settings)
- Up-skilling and supporting colleagues and family's (i.e., training, supervision, consultation and carer support groups)
- Supporting the development of person-centred care environments through reflective practice, supervision and collaboration on service design

Job responsibilities
Assessment and intervention is based on a holistic person-centred approach, which values the individual and seeks to engage staff/carers in creating supportive environments; and implement a multi-component framework for the delivery of evidence-based support.
The post holder;
- Will be expected to provide a service which will improve and maintain the emotional health of older adults, through a combination of highly specialist assessment, formulation of treatment programmes, clinical interventions and teaching.
- Will work in collaboration with professional colleagues and voluntary agencies, to provide a specialist service for older adults.
- Will contribute to the future development and planning of an arts therapies service which reflects the strategic planning of psychological services within Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.
- Will provide advice, training and consultation pertaining to arts therapies to staff from other disciplines, carers or statutory bodies as required.
- Will manage autonomously a complex case-load using person-centred and evidence-based principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions.
- Will be responsible as required by line manager for organising the placement and supervision (clinical and/or non-clinical) of arts therapies students on placement within the service.
- Will maintain HCPC registration as a condition of initial and continued employment.
- Will undertake appropriate CPD, research and audit activity
Each of the two posts is a permanent position at 18.75 hours per week (0.5 wte). The post holders will be expected to travel to other hospital sites within ABUHB. Clinical supervision will be provided by highly experienced clinical psychologists and an arts therapies supervision group. Peer support via the wider psychology, counselling and arts therapies network is also available. Professional support will be provided by the Head of Older Adult Psychology in collaboration with senior Arts Therapies colleagues from within the health board.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply. The Aneurin Bevan University Health Board is proud to support staff to build and develop Welsh language skills.
