Job summary

Clinical/Practitioner Psychologist for children with developmental delay or disability

(Band 7 fixed term, 1.0 wte for one year)

We are seeking a Clinical/Practitioner Psychologist who is passionate about promoting the emotional health and well-being of children and young people with developmental delay or disability and their families. This post will provide maternity leave cover for two psychology roles. One role (0.6 wte) is within the Helping Hands Service, which comprises a team of psychologists and assistant psychologists based across the three Children's Centres in Gwent, South Wales. The other role (0.4 wte) is within the Intensive Positive Behaviour Support Team, which comprises a multi-disciplinary team based in Serennu Children's Centre in Newport, South Wales.

The successful candidate will join a lively and proactive team of clinical psychologists and therapists delivering support to families and professionals connected to the children's centres in a needs-led way. We meet weekly for professional support and peer supervision and value a culture of reflective practice and rich continuing professional development. Our team base is both welcoming and supportive, enabling clinicians to hold a strong psychological perspective in the wide range of settings we deliver services across.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will play a key role in promoting the psychological wellbeing of children and young people with developmental delay or disability, their families and the staff who support them, through:

  1. Provision of high quality psychological information and advice, dissemination of specialist resources and workshops for families and staff
  2. Provision of psychological support, consultation and joint working with staff who are connected with the Children's Centres in Gwent
  3. Therapeutic work with children and young people with developmental delay or disability and their families through individual work, family work, and therapeutic groups

The successful candidate will conduct and supervise research and audit, and develop and evaluate new clinical and psychological programmes, as a major responsibility of the job. The post holder will also be able to contribute to the development of new psychological services for children with developmental delay or disability and participate in service planning as appropriate.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

  • HCPC Registered Practitioner Psychologist.
  • Honours degree in Psychology, giving eligibility for Graduate membership of the British Psychological Society (BPS).
  • Postgraduate doctoral level training in practitioner psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996) as accredited by the BPS.

Experience

Essential

  • Three year Doctorate training across a range of client groups but must include Children and Young people.
  • Experience of working in Psychology services in the NHS and familiarity with the professional practice of Practitioner Psychologists as specified by the DCP/BPS guidelines.
