Job summary
We are recruiting for a full-time Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist position to replace the previous substantive post-holder. This is a well-established Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist post with both community and inpatient responsibilities. The catchment area of Blaenau Gwent is the smallest and most compact local authority borough in Gwent with a population of 13,385 over 65-year-olds representing approximately 12% of the overall older adult population served by Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.
The post will be based at Ysbyty'r Tri Chwm (YTC), Ebbw Vale and is easily accessible from either Abergavenny or Newport areas. YTC is a purpose-built older adult mental health unit which houses a 15 bedded ward (Cedar Parc) for the specialist assessment and treatment of dementia inpatients. The ward is co-located with the Blaenau Gwent OA CMHT and Memory Assessment Service where the Consultant, Senior Nurse and team and outpatient offices are also situated.
Local general hospital facilities are provided, one mile away, at Ysbyty Aneurin Bevan, Ebbw Vale. Nevill Hall Hospital, Abergavenny is the nearest enhanced-local general hospital supporting our patients if they become severely physically unwell and critical care hospital facilities are provided at Grange University Hospital in Cwmbran.
Main duties of the job
The Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist will provide clinical leadership to:
- The multi-disciplinary inpatient team on Cedar Parc ward (specialist dementia assessment) and will have RC responsibility for any patients admitted under the MHA.
- The Blaenau Gwent OA CMHT and Memory Assessment Service. These are close working multidisciplinary teams that together provided community and outpatient care for older people living in the Blaenau Gwent catchment area suffering with dementia and complex functional mental illness.
The Consultant will be supported by full multidisciplinary teams, a full-time GPVTS trainee doctor and a shared Specialty Doctor in Old Age Psychiatry.
The Consultant will act as clinical supervisor to any attached rotational junior medical staff and will be expected to participate in the health board psychiatric medical undergraduate and postgraduate education programmes. There are also opportunities to participate in local multidisciplinary older adult mental health training initiatives and other training/teaching opportunities (eg care of the elderly and general medicine).
The Consultant will be expected to fully engage with relevant local and health board clinical governance activities and will be encouraged to be involved in service development and patient quality & safety improvement initiatives.
The Consultant will be expected and supported to undertake relevant CPD activities, identified through appraisal and job-planning.
