Job summary

This is a 10 session job providing senior clinical oversight to the Newport Team of Gwent Specialist Substance Misuse Service (GSSMS). Specific elements of the role include:

  • Community-based specialist addiction clinics held at GSSMS, Lower Dock Street, Newport
  • Administration duties based at GSSMS, Lower Dock Street, Newport
  • Occasional requests for inpatient assessment and reviews within mental health (St Cadoc's Hospital) and general health (Royal Gwent Hospital and Grange University Hospital)
  • Involvement with commissioning of services via service meetings with commissioners and assisting with collation of timely and accurate performance data
  • Ensuring integrated service delivery by working in partnership with third sector agencies across Gwent
  • Active involvement in service development/evaluation and research. Commitment to training.

There is also involvement in the Mental Health consultant on call rota (1:26 with prospective cover).

Main duties of the job

  • Deliver outpatient clinics to residents of Newport borough within the GSSMS clinical base at Lower Dock Street
  • Carry out home visits with specialist addictions nurses to patients unable to attend clinic
  • Respond to requests for ward liaison assessments and reviews for patients admitted to both general and mental health wards
  • Deliver outpatient clinics for the newly developed Over the Counter/Prescription Only Medicines service and act as clinical lead in developing the service
  • Attend and occasionally chair, the weekly MDT meetings
  • Supervise the care and treatment of GSSMS patients admitted to wards by GSSMS for substance use interventions (e.g., detoxification and stabilisation). Day to day care will be provided by the resident medical staff but GSSMS retain overall clinical responsibility for their care.
  • To meet with the relatives/carers of patients as appropriate
  • To conscientiously keep abreast of dictation and issue of relevant letters and summaries pertinent to patients' care
  • To attend case conferences, professionals' meetings etc on patients under your care
  • To provide senior medical addictions input to the Newport Co-occurring Gateway Panel (COG)
  • To provide advice to staff within third sector agencies (currently Gwent Drug and Alcohol Service, GDAS)
  • Signing the regular controlled drug prescriptions for Newport patients as well as responding to ad hoc requests for changes to prescriptions where clinically needed
