Job summary

These posts will support the clinical futures model within ABUHB, and you will join colleagues in a very dynamic and forward-looking Directorate of Care of the Elderly Medicine.

Aneurin Bevan Health Board is one of seven Local Health Boards in Wales. It provides acute, community and mental healthcare services to more than 600,000 people living in Southeast Wales and is one of the largest and busiest NHS health boards/Trusts in the UK. It is responsible for delivering services through the Grange University Hospital delivering critical acute care, and its three enhanced local general hospitals in Newport, Abergavenny, and Caerphilly, supported by five community hospitals, health centres and extensive mental health and learning disabilities facilities.

Main duties of the job

Development of a comprehensive Care of the Elderly Service at Royal Gwent Hospital

Development and delivery of a comprehensive geriatric assessment for the elderly patients

Acute inpatient assessment and treatment

Development of a subspecialty service as inpatient or outpatient.

General and Specialist DGH and Community-based outpatient clinics

Support and Training for Primary and Social Care Teams

Effective leadership to multidisciplinary staff members of the unit

Development of teaching and research within the Organisation

The potential for Health Board-wide developments and a closer liaison with primary care and social services is substantial and exciting.

The Elderly care service at RGH currently provides acute medical care, rehabilitation assessment and treatment, falls & Orthogeriatric, intermediate care, EFU, Movement disorder and stroke as well as other specialist clinics. As a Consultant you will be supported in the Wards by a F1, F2, CT1, as well as a highly skilled multi-disciplinary team including nurses, therapies, and Physician Associates

Any applicant who is unable, for personal reasons, to work full-time will be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis in consultation with consultant colleagues
