Job description
Job responsibilities
Previous and current post-holders have gained considerable clinical and non-clinical experience, with many either securing Higher Surgical Training posts or successfully passing the FRCS examination ahead of Article 14 applications. This post has become available due to restructuring of the emergency surgical service and reconfiguration as part of our Clinical Futures programme including opening of a new hospital (Grange University Hospital) as a dedicated Specialist and Critical Care Centre. This has resulted in consultant expansion and redesign of emergency and elective services.
A named educational supervisor and clinical supervisors will be provided, and training opportunities will be equivalent to those available to our higher surgical trainees on the All-Wales general surgical training scheme. This post will be based initially in either upper or lower GI surgery, with potential to gain experience in other sub-specialties as opportunities become available.
Clinically this post includes commitments to emergency and elective general and GI surgery including emergency vascular surgery, as well ongoing inpatient and outpatient care. Team rotas within sub-specialties ensure equal access to training opportunities, alongside higher surgical trainees, core surgical trainees and Foundation doctors. Clinical commitments will be primarily in the Grange University Hospital, with elective commitments on other sites within the Health Board, including Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport and Nevill Hall Hospital in Abergavenny. For this reason, post-holders will be expected to travel independently between sites; travel expenses will be reimbursed in line with Health Board policy.
The post holder will participate in an approximately 1:12 full shift on call rota covering emergency General and Vascular Surgery, as part of a team comprising core and Foundation trainees in addition to the consultant on call. Vascular Consultant cover is provided as part of a regional network. The Grange University Hospital opened in November 2020 and has replaced the emergency surgical services from the Royal Gwent and Nevill Hall Hospitals as the main emergency site, being the site of a single busy unselected emergency take. Based on NELA data, this is likely to be the busiest hospital in Wales.
The post includes a wide range of opportunities for portfolio development including research and quality improvement/audit projects leading to regional or national presentations and publications, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching opportunities and leadership/management roles. There is a range of in-house Continuing Professional Development courses available.
The Department across the Health Board is currently staffed by 17 General Surgery/GI consultants, 4 Vascular and 6 Breast Surgery consultants, 10 Specialty Training registrars, 12 Senior Clinical Fellow/Specialty Doctors, 8 core trainees, 3 FY2 doctors and 20 FY1 doctors. There are excellent inter-departmental relationships including with radiology, anaesthetics/ITU, gastroenterology and emergency medicine.
The post will not have recognised educational approval, but will have the same supervision, study leave and annual leave as that of a recognised training post.
Those wishing to discuss the post informally in the first instance or arrange a visit to the department should contact Miss Tamsin Boyce (tamsin.boyce@wales.nhs.uk), Consultant Surgeon or Miss Charlotte Thomas (charlotte.thomas5@wales.nhs.uk), Consultant Surgeon.
This position involves Regulated Activity with children and adults as defined by the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act (amended by the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012) and the following checks will be undertaken following any conditional offer:
- Enhanced check with barred list information, including an adults and childrens barred list check
Applicants must hold or be eligible to hold full registration and a licence to practice with the General Medical Council.
THIS IS A NON TRAINING POST
Free parking is available across all Aneurin Bevan University Health Board Sites.
