Cardiff and Vale University Health Board

Emergency Nurse Practitioner

The closing date is 25 November 2025

Job summary

We are looking for enthusiastic and compassionate Registered Nurses, Paramedics, or Physiotherapists to join our Minor Injuries Team at UHW and Barry Minor Injuries Unit. Whether you're an experienced Emergency Nurse Practitioner (ENP) or looking to develop into the role, we welcome your application.

As an Emergency Practitioner, you will:

  • Provide high-quality, autonomous assessment and management of patients with minor injuries.
  • Work within a supportive multidisciplinary team in a fast-paced, patient-centred environment.
  • Be empowered to work independently within an agreed scope of practice, with access to senior clinical support.

Development Opportunities

The post is advertised as band 7, but we welcome applications from those who wish to develop in to the role. Successful candidates who do not yet meet the band 7 competencies, will be appointed under Agenda for Change Annex 21 as a trainee Emergency Practitioner.

We offer;

  • Bespoke training pathways for nurses, paramedics, and physiotherapists new to minor injuries.
  • Support from Lead Consultants for Minor Injuries and a Consultant Nurse, ensuring a strong foundation in clinical decision-making and minor injury management.

What We're Looking For

  • Registered Nurse, Paramedic, or Physiotherapist with significant post-registration experience in emergency care.
  • A genuine interest in minor injuries.
  • ENP qualification is desirable, but not essential -- we support development into this role.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work as part of the Minor Injuries Team within the Emergency Department at the University Hospital of Wales or Barry Minor Injuries Unit. You will:

  • Apply advanced clinical assessment and diagnostic skills to patients presenting with minor injuries.
  • Work autonomously within an agreed scope of practice to assess, treat, discharge, or refer patients to appropriate specialty teams.
  • Request and interpret appropriate imaging to support clinical decision-making.
  • Perform a range of clinical interventions including fracture manipulation, joint reduction, wound closure, and other minor injury treatments.
  • Administer medications under Patient Group Directions (PGDs) or as an Independent Prescriber (if qualified).
  • Support and facilitate the development of clinical practice through active engagement in research, education, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Contribute to the teaching and education of the wider multidisciplinary Emergency Department team.
  • Participate in ongoing service development through audit, evaluation, and innovation.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply
