Job summary

The Paediatric Surgery Service within Cardiff and Vale UHB provides secondary and tertiary services across South Wales. There are 1,500 new outpatient referrals per year and 2,100 follow-up patients. At least 75% of these referrals are of a tertiary nature. Approximately 550 day cases are undertaken each year and the department deals with 2,100 elective and emergency admissions per annum.

The seven Consultant Paediatric Surgeons cover a 24-hour emergency service for acute surgical problems from secondary and tertiary sources. Currently this is a split-week on-call pattern. This facilitates complex handover and joint operating. Elective sessions are cancelled during the on-call week.

Main duties of the job

You will provide with senior colleagues (as appropriate) a service in the speciality to the hospitals so designated, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness and promotion of health.

You will provide a service providing care for infants and children with arange of elective conditions which are encompassed within the general surgery of childhood.

You will collaborate with departmental colleagues to further develop the existing services for surgical enteral feeding device insertion and common foreskin disorders.

You will collaborate with departmental colleagues to develop new services to streamline patient flow for other common paediatric surgical conditions, for example, patients requiring surgical central venous access procedures and patients with chronic constipation requiring diagnosis or exclusion of Hirschsprung's Disease.

You will assume an active role in imparting knowledge of diagnosis, treatment, and management of pertinent paediatric surgical conditions to resident doctors, nursing and operating department staff through a range of instructional methods, including clinical simulation scenarios that prioritise human factors in addition to clinical expertise

Essential

  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Valid Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS) certification

Desirable

  • Academic excellence
  • Relevant higher degree
  • FRCS (Paeds) or equivalent
  • Specialist Registration in Paediatric Surgery

Experience

Essential

  • 12 years' postgraduate medical / dental work including a minimum of 6 years within the specialty at Specialty Doctor / SAS grade level or equivalent (overseas experience to be assessed in individual cases)
  • Management of tertiary level Paediatric Surgery patients

Desirable

  • Proficiency in paediatric laparoscopic surgery
  • Proficiency in paediatric vascular access
