Cardiff and Vale University Health Board

Consultant Cardiologist in Adult Congenital Heart Disease

The closing date is 15 June 2025

Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for the post of Consultant Cardiologist in Adult Congenital Heart Disease based at University Hospital of Wales (UHW), Cardiff.

This post has been developed as part of an expansion of the ACHD service commissioned by the NHS Wales Joint Commissioning Committee (JCC). This service works on a hub and spoke model with Cardiff and Vale UHB acting as the level 2 South Wales hub with links into the level 1 Network hub in Bristol and outreaching to each Health Board across South Wales.

Although this post is full-time, consideration will be given to applicants who require flexible working arrangements.

Applicants should either be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within six months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT / CESR(CP) at the time of interview.

You will be able to take advantage of the excellent Consultant contract for Wales. The basic salary range for this post is £106,000 per annum to £154,760 per annum.

Applicants must ensure they provide names and contact details of referees covering at least the last 3 years of their employment/training history in full. In addition, applicants who are currently or have most recently been employed as a substantive Consultant or as a Locum Consultant in post for more than 12 months must also provide the name of their Medical Director as an additional referee.

Main duties of the job

The majority of the post holder's time will be spent assessing and treating patients with ACHD but the job plan will allow dedicated time for developing a sub-specialty interest that would complement the work of the department. Close links with our SWSW-CHD Network Level 1 Centre at the Bristol Heart Institute are encouraged; this may include DCC or SPA sessions in Bristol, including out-of-hours on call, subject to further discussion. You will be expected to support the expansion and strengthening of an ACHD clinical network across South and West Wales, including the implementation of Wales and UK standards for the care of patients with ACHD. You will develop close links with colleagues at the Level 1 centre in Bristol in the diagnostic and treatment planning facilitated through the MDT process.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is recognised as a teaching centre of excellence in a wide range of clinical services. Academic interests will be encouraged; research and teaching in collaboration with Cardiff University's School of Medicine will be expected.
