Job summary

To work as a member of a team of graphic designers in the Medical Illustration department, providing graphic and illustrative support to staff within Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.

Main duties of the job

Responsible for the delivery of a digital poster print service to support public and staff information, research and education to all levels of staff Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Operational Work as part of the design team to carry out graphic techniques and large format digital posters to the highest professional standards, to design illustration and graphic material for patient education, staff and public information. As well as teaching and research support within Cardiff and Vale UHB, under supervision of the Senior Designers, Middleweight Designer or the Head of Graphics and Print. This material may also be used for electronic delivery (e-mail, web design and video animation). Interpret graphic design briefs and requests for large format digital posters to meet clients needs across the Cardiff & Vale UHB, where necessary liaise with the Head of Graphics and Print and/or Senior Designers and Middleweight Designer. Develop visual materials in a variety of formats, to be suitable for the end application, ie web, social, print etc. Use of specialist design software and hardware, for the origination of detailed images and accurate visual representation of data and information. Keep up to date with current software applications. Understand current developments in design, communications, print, digital imaging, multimedia and associated technologies. Manage own workload prioritising where necessary. Maintain quality control of finished work and contribute to the section as a whole during meetings and critiques. Together with the Head of Graphics and Print, Senior Designers and Middleweight Designer assist with the introduction of innovative working practices to reflect service and user needs e.g. large format digital posters, patient interactive information using and web technologies, 2D & 3D animation etc.

Communication The post holder will communicate with a range of other healthcare professionals and senior staff. To liaise with Print Unit and external printers when necessary. Work within relevant legislation/policies in data protection/confidentiality and codes of professional conduct/practice. To advise the UHB staff in effective methods of design, production and finishing of graphic design work, including: printed matter, scientific posters, lecture material and digital scanning. Including relevant legislation/policies; in data protection/confidentiality and codes of professional conduct/practice, copyright consent and discrimination. Implements new policies as directed by the Head of Graphics and Print into own working area and propose any changes, which will enhance or benefit the service. Assist the Head of Graphics and Print with forward planning, development and promotion of the UHB graphics and print service.

Administration Maintain data archiving regularly and accurate work records. Ensure the efficient use of materials and the cost-effective use of all UHB resources. Adhere to UHB policies and procedures.

Supervision and Training Demonstrates own area of working techniques to new employees, trainee clinical photographers and work experience students.
