Job summary
Ynys Saff Sexual Assault Referral Centre at Cardiff Royal Infirmary provides a safe space, specialist support and dedicated care for people who have been sexually assaulted.
We are looking for 3 highly motivated candidates who would like to be part of our new regional service for South East Wales
All SARCs in England and Wales are currently waiting to be accredited to ISO15189 Forensic Standards to reflect the high standard of care and forensic integrity for cases that may be heard at Crown Court. A willingness to provide a DNA sample for the police Staff Elimination Database is required. This will be discussed further at interview.
The successful candidates will be contracted for one hour a month to attend a compulsory supervision/rota meeting and will be part of an on-call rota comprising of weekday evenings, 5pm-8am and at least 3 weekend shifts a month on a 12 hour rota 7am - 7pm and Bank Holidays.
For all on-call shifts an on-call shift allowance is paid:
Weekday/Weekends £24.83
Bank Holidays £46.66
In addition any call outs attended at SARC for forensic purposes are paid at a Band 4 hourly rate at a time and a half.
There may be some circumstances when the post holder will be required to work from another site such as Accident and Emergency.
Although you will be part of the team, this is a primarily lone working post.
Main duties of the job
For this role you will need to be someone was is able to:
- Be calm and supportive in order to ensure that a victim is being listened to and treated with respect.
- Be supportive without trying to 'fix' a victim. Could you sit with someone going through unimaginable trauma without wanting to hug them or try and make things go back to normal?
- Be impartial information givers. You are there for the victim and to inform them of their choices, rather than making the decision for them.
The post holder will provide support, information and crisis management to clients attending the Sexual Assault Referral Centre in partnership with the police and Forensic Medical Examiner. Following the completion of a forensic medical examination, the post holder will carryout a DNA forensic clean of the SARC following strict cleaning procedures as well as completing the required administration duties.
Must be able to travel to SARC 24 hours of the day within the required time
The successful applicants will be able to work on their own initiative in emotional and stressful situations. The ability to remain calm under pressure whilst supporting clients in trauma is central to the role.

Due to the requirement of the Out of Hours Crisis Worker to open the SARC within the hour, ability to travel from home to Cardiff Royal Infirmary any time during the day/night is essential
Whilst the role of a Crisis worker can be emotionally challenging, it is also an extremely rewarding role where you will be supported to develop your skills and expertise. Being a Crisis worker will allow you to develop your understanding of how multiple agencies work together, develop confidence in working with vulnerable people, improve your knowledge of safeguarding and be part of the NHS and South East Wales Regional SARC service.
The post holder will be flexible to cover shortfalls in the rota at short notice due to staff sickness,in order to operate the service on a 24 hours basis.
The successful candidates must be willing to attend an initial training week and be available to cover all out of hours shifts.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.
