Specialist Midwife for Bereavement

Job summary

  • The post holder will be expected to lead the strategic agenda for reduction of stillbirths in Wales, liaising with all key members of the multi disciplinary team and service users related to the speciality
  • To be responsible for all aspects of women's care including the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of direct woman centred care
  • To work weekdays with occasional weekends and / or night duty to monitor the quality of the service throughout a 24 hour period
  • To provide specialised training for staff regarding the management of pregnancy loss
  • To act as a role model and mentor abiding by the values and behaviours of the organisation, promoting excellence through practice

Main duties of the job

  • Act as a clinical specialist to bereaved families
  • An experienced clinical midwife. Required to undertake clinical midwifery duties in caring for bereaved parents.
  • Be a resource for medical nursing and midwifery staff on physical, psychological and administrative aspects of pregnancy loss and bereavement
  • Liaise with the lead nurse for bereavement services and chaplaincy
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with chaplains, bereavement nurse, mortuary officer, neonatal pathologist, histology and staff at the University Hospital of Wales site mortuary.
  • Give specialist advice to doctors, nurses and midwives on specific aspects of pregnancy loss and bereavement care
  • Be available to give practical support and help either by telephone or in person to members of staff at all levels
  • Ensure that the University Health Board's arrangements for responding to the religious and cultural needs of families are met
