Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic person to join the Medical Technical Team within the Posture and Mobility Service, ALAS. The post will be based out of the PMC in Treforest, covering work within the South West Wales community.

The role of the Medical Technical Officer is to carry out assessment of an individual's clinical, postural and pressure needs and to visit users at home / schools to assess for, prescribe, deliver, fit and adapt or modify mobility equipment.

The successful candidate will be registered/eligible to register as a Healthcare Science Practitioner or Clinical Technologist e.g. accredited vocational degree or equivalent.Significant experience of a medical and technical or engineering environment is essential, with knowledge and understanding of postural assessment and biomechanics. Experience of design, manufacture and management of specialised assistive technology specified to meet clinical need is required for this role.

It would be an advantage to have experience of working with wheelchairs, particularly with the fitting and adjustment of them. An understanding of seating and anatomy would also be preferred.

The successful candidate must be willing to undertake lone working and driving across the large geographical area we cover, for which ALAS vans are provided.

Main duties of the job

Brief duties of the role include;

To manage a varied caseload of adults with complex postural needs, using evidence-based/client-centered principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions in primary and secondary care settings to include home visits and community facilities.

To carry out assessments of patients referred for posture, pressure and specialised mobility equipment to meet service user's complex postural and mobility needs and associated clinical conditions. To be responsible for the environmental assessment and fitting of the equipment.

To triage and prioritise referrals in a timely manner and to make technical decisions based on referral information demonstrating a high level of clinical reasoning skills.

To use a wide range of appropriate tools to fit and adjust equipment and employ safe manual handling techniques when moving heavy/awkward equipment, often in enclosed environments within community settings (homes, schools and hospital wards etc.).
