Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Cardiologist with an interest in Interventional Cardiology to work within the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff.
This permanent appointment will complement the present team of 17 full-time Clinical Cardiologists dedicated to the delivery of tertiary cardiac services of the highest standard to a population of 1.3 million people. The department presently offers a full range of interventional cardiology procedures and this post is required to support, in particular, the acute coronary syndrome work stream and the primary PCI rota. However, opportunities to pursue sub-speciality interests including TAVI may be possible.
You will be able to take advantage of the excellent Consultant contract for Wales. The basic salary range for this post is £100,000 per annum to £146,000 per annum.
Applicants must ensure they provide names and contact details of referees covering at least the last 3 years of their employment/training history in full. In addition, applicants who are currently or have most recently been employed as a substantive Consultant or as a Locum Consultant in post for more than 12 months must also provide the name of their Medical Director as an additional referee.
Main duties of the job
Working alongside 6 interventional cardiology colleagues, you will be responsible for delivering approximately 1750 coronary interventions and 2500 diagnostic cardiac catheterisations annually. The full range of standard and advanced coronary interventional procedures are performed. The 3 catheter labs are equipped with pressure wire, orbital and rotational atherectomy, laser, intravascular lithoplasty, OCT and intravascular ultrasound. There is an active primary PCI programme with more than 500 cases performed annually. We have a high-volume complex PCI and CTO service and have recently established a protected high-risk PCI program including impella.
The post holder will participate in a 1 in 9 on-call rota for acute interventional cardiology at UHW in addition to a 1 in 17 rota for acute general cardiology. The successful candidate will be expected to take a lead role in the rapid access chest pain service.
Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is recognised as a teaching centre of excellence in a wide range of clinical services.
Academic interests will be encouraged; research and teaching in collaboration with Cardiff University's School of Medicine will be expected.
Although this post is full-time, consideration will be given to applicants who require flexible working arrangements.
Applicants should either be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within six months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT / CESR(CP) at the time of interview.
