Job summary

The Children, Young People and Family Health Services Directorate, has an exciting opportunity for a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join us as a Parent Carer Mentor within the Llygad Team (Psychologically informed team supporting children under 5 with an emerging learning disability/ complex global developmental delay)

The successful applicant will have a compassionate and reflective nature, enjoy working as part of a small team of professionals and to value making a difference to children and families lives.

The successful applicant will be attuned to sharing their knowledge from their own lived experience to inspire hope and belief that meaningful lives are possible. They will do this through training sessions, home visiting, group working and in relevant meetings. They will also support Llygad and the wider service systems to understand ways in which service delivery could be developed to better meet the children and families needs.

It is important to be able to advocate for the children and families and excellent and effective written and spoken communication skills are essential.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a compassionate, enthusiastic and reflective parent carer mentor.

It's important that you are an excellent communicator with lived experience of parenting a child with (an emerging) Learning Disability/ complex global developmental delay. And be able to adapt this communication style with children/ parents/ professionals

Applicants will be highly organised and efficient with excellent time and diary management skills and the ability to prioritise requests and to deal with conflicting demands. They will enjoy working collaboratively with others and to be able to manage clinically sensitive information that may be distressing.

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential

  • Completion of Accredited Peer Support Worker Training and Vocational/NVQ Level 3 Health and Social Care qualification and equivalent demonstrable knowledge and experience.
  • Understanding of the issues and concerns of individuals with emerging Learning disabilities and/or neuro developmental concerns.
  • Knowledge of Positive Behaviour Support/ developmental systems model/ understanding of the ways in which behaviour presents in relation to contextual factors

Desirable

  • knowledge of local and national policies in respect of safeguarding children and the protection of vulnerable adults

Experience

Essential

  • Lived experience of being a parent or carer to a child with a Moderate to Severe Learning Disability
  • Lived experience of the use of restrictive practices Lived experience of Positive Behaviour Support approaches
  • Experience of working in a team or group environment
  • Demonstrate importance of maintaining client confidentiality, professional boundaries and actively promote commitment to Positive Behaviour Support principles and positive role modelling

Desirable

  • Lived experience of having accessed Llygad/CALDS or equivalent specialist LD services.
  • Experience of working in the public sector Experience of training / teaching / mentoring others
  • Trained as an E-PAtS facilitator/ willingness to train as one
