Job summary

The work of the department is based at University Hospital of Wales (UHW) with inpatient beds located on ward C6 PESU and emergency beds on the Same Day Emergency Care unit (SDEC) & B6 ward. There are two dedicated urology operating theatres in the Short Stay Surgical Unit (SSSU) with sessions running every weekday. A Da Vinci Xi Robot is situated within SSSU. The urology operating theatre has its own dedicated laparoscopic stack system with both single & triple chip cameras and digital recording facilities. It also has its own 100W Holmium laser.

Most urological surgery is carried out in SSSU which provides facilities for 23 hr 59 min patient stay. Patient requiring extended stay are cared for in a dedicated inpatient ward. Outpatient services are based in a dedicated clinic suite. There are full video- urodynamic facilities.

Specialist surgery carried out within the department includes:

  • Robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy & partial nephrectomy
  • Laparoscopic nephrectomy & pyeloplasty
  • Percutaneous nephrolithotomy & flexible ureterorenoscopic stone surgery
  • Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate
  • Cystectomy & orthotopic bladder reconstruction (bladder cancer)
  • Renal tumours surgery involving the inferior vena cava using cardiopulmonary bypass
  • Retroperitoneal surgery (advanced testicular cancer)
  • Reconstructive urology
  • Fertility services inc. surgical sperm retrieval

A satellite service is provided to the Spinal Surgery & Rehab Unit at Llandough Hospital.
