SPECIALTY DOCTOR IN YOUNG ONSET DEMENTIA

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Specialty Doctor to join our Young Onset Dementia (YOD) service within Mental Health Services for Older People (MHSOP) . The post is an 8 session post, initially for 1 year.

Main duties of the job

The Cardiff & Vale Young Onset Dementia Service is a post Primary Progressive Dementia diagnosis Service, who work primarily with patients & the families of patients aged under 65 diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease & variants, Frontal temporal dementia, Vascular dementia, Mixed dementia & Lewy Body dementia/Parkinson's dementia.

The post-holder will be based in the Young Onset Dementia Cariad Centre in Barry Hospital & will work in the community & inpatient settings. The work will consist of assessments of emergency & routine psychiatric patients, together with ongoing care under the supervision of the Consultant. Duties will involve a spectrum of activities including history taking, assessment of mental states, electronic record keeping, preparation of discharge summaries & written communication with GPs following outpatient clinics & domiciliary visits.

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

  • MB BS or recognised equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration with a Licence to Practice

Desirable

  • Academic excellence (prizes, merits, distinctions etc.)
  • Section 12 (2) recognition under MHA 1983 or qualification to become Section 12 approved
  • Experience in working in mental health services in UK.

EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Four years full-time postgraduate training (or part-time equivalent), at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as fixed-term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty, OR equivalent experience / competencies*

Desirable

  • MRCPsych
  • Experience of working in mental health services in UK.

SKILLS KNOWLEDGE ABILITY

Essential

  • Commitment to team approach and multi-disciplinary working
  • Effective communication skills
  • Understanding of clinical risk management and clinical governance
