Job summary

Applications are invited for the part-time post of Consultant Medical Biochemist with Metabolic Medicine, working 7 sessions per week across the University Hospital of Wales and University Hospital Llandough sites in Cardiff.

The department was formed in April 2019 and brings together growing clinical services in Metabolic Medicine, providing the governance framework and required resilience for these developing services.

All Consultants in the department are involved with laboratory service provision within the Department of Medical Biochemistry & Immunology and Toxicology. The Department of Metabolic Medicine provides regional, national and UK-wide services and has a growing research base. Services provided are an All Wales Inherited Metabolic Diseases Service, Lipid and Cardiovascular Risk services, Familial Hypercholesterolaemia Wales Service, Metabolic Renal Stones Service, Specialised Weight Management Service, Department of Medical Biochemistry & Immunology and Toxicology, the Welsh Home Parenteral Nutrition / Intestinal Failure service, and Point of Care Testing Department.

Applicants should either be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within six months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT / CESR(CP) at the time of interview.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for service provision and leadership with colleague for the weight management, lipid and parenteral nutrition services. Support will also be provided to the Acute Biochemistry Service across hospital sites to ensure provision of on-site senior support for junior medical and scientific colleagues and provision of expert advice to colleagues on request. Contribution to the duty biochemist rota is not required for this post. The appointee will also be responsible for the leadership and strategic direction of the POCT Department.

You will be able to take advantage of the excellent Consultant contract for Wales. The basic salary range for this post is £60,244 per annum to £78,212 per annum for a 7-session commitment plus a further £18,670 per annum available in Commitment Awards. Consultants in Wales paid on one of the first three points of the substantive Consultant pay scale also receive a Wales recruitment incentive payment.

In addition, applicants who are currently or have most recently been employed as a substantive Consultant or as a Locum Consultant in post for more than 12 months must also provide the name of their Medical Director as an additional referee.
