Job summary
An opportunity has arisen for Band 7 Senior Controllers, to work jointly with Emergency Medicine and Patient Flow and Site Services. 50% of the time you will be gain experience working to manage the flow within the Emergency Department (ED)and balancing clinical risk throughout the directorate. The other 50% of the time you will be working alongside Patient Flow and Site Services, supporting the ED to manage flow by working alongside other clinical boards, facilitating and coordinating daily bed allocation activity for all incoming patients.
The aim of this role is to identify and address constraints, improve patient flow and sustain good relationships with the Welsh Ambulance Service Trust.
The candidates must have experience or exposure to working in acute settings, and the ability to remain focused under pressure.
This is a rotational post, days and nights, working for both the Medical and Executive directorate, and is pivotal to the operational running of both the Emergency Unit and OPAT Centre.
Full training and support for all successful candidates will be supported.
Main duties of the job
Roles and Responsibilities
- To work with the Emergency Unit team, to ensure there is patient flow, and a timely release of ambulances within the emergency and assessment unit areas. To ensure patient safety is paramount at all times
- Use expert knowledge to ensure the efficient and appropriate placement of patients, by facilitating and coordinating daily bed allocation activity for all incoming patients across two main sites. Taking into consideration the Welsh Assembly Government initiatives and targets. For example: 15-minute WAST handovers, 4-hour stroke admissions, EU 4-hour performance, 12-hour EU trolley waits, facilitating 2 admitting critical care spaces and referral to treatment time
- Under the direction of Head of Operations, the post holder has responsibility for initiating the Escalation Policy which impacts across the organisation and also external organisations e.g. Welsh Ambulance Service Trust
- Manage the patient flow, including implementing the UHB emergency admissions escalation policy which involves accumulation of data quickly and accurately often under pressure. Communicating action plans with the Senior Manager on call
- Ensuring adequate flow and capacity through the Emergency Department (ED) and Assessment Unit (AU) including the paediatric and minor injuries unit within ED
