Clinical Teaching Fellow Child Health

Applications are invited forthis exciting opportunity at Noah's Ark Children's Hospital in Cardiff.

The successful applicant will:

  1. Join our Child Health faculty and play an active role in organisation and delivery of undergraduate medical teaching (50%).
  2. Work clinically within General Paediatrics (50%). Of note, placement in another specialty instead may be possible subject to your prior experience, interest and post availability nearer the time.
  3. Undertake a Post Graduate Certificate in medical education with Cardiff University (fees funded)

Main duties of the job

The post is aimed at ST6-8 level or equivalent, but strong applications from ST4-5 level will be considered.

The post is for one year, from 6th September 2023 till and including 3rd September 2024. The post is full time with a 50% out of hours supplement.

For Wales Deanery trainees the option exists to continue training at 50% less than full time basis alongside applying for out of program experience. Advance discussion with the program director is strongly recommended.

TEACHING COMPONENT (50%)

The successful candidate will join Dr Julian Forton, Educational Lead in Child Health, in running the Undergraduate Teaching Programme in Child Health at The Childrens Hospital for Wales. He/She will be expected to deliver teaching, manage assessments, and administer the course through coordination of consultant and SpR colleagues, and support students as they pass through the Child Health programme. Significant experience will therefore be gained in both teaching and management.

The post holder will work closely with the Educational Lead in Child Health and undergraduate tutors to deliver quality evidence-based undergraduate education to medical students following the C21 curriculum.

The teaching will mostly (but not exclusively) be based in the University Hospital of Wales. Other teaching will take place at Cardiff University Medical School (UHW Campus).

The successful applicant will be expected to develop and expand the clinical teaching for undergraduate medical students on clinical placement within the Health Board.

Duties will include:

  • Administration of the Child Health C21 module at The Childrens Hospital for Wales
  • Contribution to bedside teaching, small group teaching, core teaching and lecture components of the course
  • Administration of exit OSCE for students at The Childrens Hospital for Wales
  • Educational supervision
  • Pastoral care to students
  • Examination in University Clinical Examination
  • Writing of written exam questions
  • Demonstrating and teaching clinical skills
  • Chairing student case presentations
  • Development of e-learning programmes for undergraduate students
  • The post holder would be encouraged and supported to undertake a postgraduate qualification in medical education during the appointment
  • The candidate would be encouraged to develop research programmes related to the evaluation and development of undergraduate teaching.
