Job summary
General surgery activity is based predominantly at the University Hospital of Wales (UHW) although Endoscopy and Day Case Surgery is also undertaken at University Hospital of Llandough (UHL). The UHW is a busy tertiary referral hospital and the Major Trauma Centre for the South Wales region.
Currently patients requiring emergency surgery are managed within three 24 hour/7 days a week CEPOD lists with two half day dedicated General Surgery emergency lists aimed at managing hot gallbladders.. Approximately 250-300 emergency laparotomies are performed each year and recent years have seen a significant improvement in outcomes through quality improvement initiatives.
There is an ongoing exciting programme to redesign emergency surgical services with the opening of a dedicated 24/7 same-day emergency care (SDEC) unit and acute admissions ward scheduled for 2022. This will be supported by expansion of the medical workforce and further development of advanced nurse practitioners. Alongside this existing CEPOD theatre lists will be utilised for the most urgent cases. The ambition within Cardiff and Vale UHB is to develop Emergency General Surgery as a dedicated speciality while maintaining existing subspecialist input.

Main duties of the job
This post is ideally suited to a junior trainee (CT 2 or 3) or who wishes to further their experience of Emergency General Surgery prior to applying for Specialist Registrar training posts. Existing ST 3 or 4 trainees would be considered as part of out of programme experience and this may suit trainees thinking of developing a Specialist interest in Emergency General Surgery.
The appointee will be based within the new Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) Unit due to open in 2022. They will support the assessment and treatment of Emergency General Surgery patients at the University Hospital of Wales. There will also be opportunities for involvement with more This will include undertaking supervised surgery on the dedicated SDEC lists with good opportunities to achieve competency in laparoscopic appendicectomy and cholecystectomy as well as surgery for emergency hernia and perianal sepsis. complex and urgent laparotomies through the CEPOD theatre list.
