Job summary

Applications are invited for exceptional candidates to join the Gastroenterology Directorate within the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board as a full-time fixed term Clinical Fellow in Gastroenterology & Neuroendocrine Tumours for 12 months in the first instance.

Main duties of the job

Working with the lead of the Neuroendocrine Cancer service, alongside the NET CNSs and a number of specialists in Gastroenterology, endocrinology, oncology, radiology, and surgery throughout South Wales, you will be responsible for care for outpatients and inpatients with neuroendocrine tumours.

You will attend Neuroendocrine Cancer Clinics, including virtual clinics and preparation, and be responsible for outpatient care for patients from South Wales, under supervision.

You will attend, prepare and present cases at the South Wales NET Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) meetings, other regional NET meetings, service meetings and undertake administrative tasks related to patients. There will be an opportunity to contribute to internationally unique research and service improvement activities as part of the national service, in addition to educational activities. You will supervise junior doctors and medical students.

You will cooperate with the NET Clinical Nurse Specialists, NET dietician, and administrative staff, with regards to inpatient/outpatient and GP queries, and coordination of referrals from other organisations.

There will be an expectation that the successful candidate will perform some general gastroenterology/hepatology duties including gastroenterology/hepatology ward cover and retrieval at UHW and possibly endoscopy, depending on the ability of the candidate.

There is no commitment to an out-of-hours rota.

About us

The Department provides a comprehensive service for patients with GI disorders from Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan. We also provide tertiary services not available in local hospitals such as complex hepatobiliary disease, EUS, oesophageal manometry, complex IBD, intestinal failure and home parenteral nutrition and advanced endoscopy including EMR, ESD and RFA. The ERCP service is based at UHW and deals with 450 cases per year of a secondary and tertiary nature. Bowel screening colonoscopy is performed at UHL (3 screening colonoscopists), which is also a regional centre for endoscopy training and training and assessment of potential screening colonoscopists.

We have good links with Cardiff University and the Wales Deanery; as a teaching unit, we are driving forward a programme of medical education, international research, and innovations in gastroenterology and endoscopy. It is an exciting time to join the Health Board with expansion of the nationally commissioned South Wales Neuroendocrine Cancer Service, a tertiary cancer service for patients with Neuroendocrine Tumours (NETs) and since February 2022, an accredited European Centre of Excellence. This is an innovative, patient-centred, tertiary service achieving awards including the UK Patient Experience Network award, British Society of Gastroenterology service development award and other national awards. As one of the larger centres in the UK, it receives approximately 220 new patients a year.

The majority of patients have Gastroenteropancreatic-NETs (GEP-NETs) involving elements of specific luminal Gastroenterology, endoscopy and hepatobiliary medicine expertise. The service has been developed through clinical leadership working with gastroenterology/hepatology, endocrinology, surgery, oncology, radiology, nuclear medicine, palliative care and pathology teams, identifying patients goals through co-production. 2.6 WTE Clinical Nurse Specialists provide nursing support and coordination for patients across South Wales alongside a NET dietician.
