Job summary
The Clinical Fellow posts will be based at the University Hospital of Wales(UHW), Cardiff and at the Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend. This is part of an existing networking arrangement between the UHB's. The post wasintroduced to broaden the subspecialty service at both units and to provide sub specialist training to a high level and facilitate high quality research.
There is a weekly regional postgraduate teaching afternoon at Cardiff Eye Unit and sub-specialist teaching seminars.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will participate in - 6 Glaucoma clinics and 2 theatre sessions. A high degree of proficiency will be expected in general ophthalmology, phacoemulsification and a basic grounding in the sub-specialty concerned.
The Unit is fully equipped with all the facilities to be expected in a modernophthalmic unit including Argon and SLT/YAG and Diode lasers, B-scan,Humphrey Visual Field Machine, OCT, Optos retinal imaging, IOL Master 700 and Pentacam.
Excellent opportunities are available to pursue research, both those currently being undertaken in the Department and those of interest to the individual. An active program in glaucoma research at both the clinical and basic science level is conducted under the direction of Professor Morgan at the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences. State of the art imaging facilities exist using commercially available technologies (HRT/OCT) but also focused on the development of new imaging modalities (UHR-OCT/ adaptive optical systems) at the School of Optometry. Professor Morgan's group is engaged in study of glaucoma pathophysiology using a range of glaucoma models. Ms Ng lead clinical research projects in the treatment of glaucoma with a particular interest in angle closure glaucoma.
The Glaucoma Unit is fully digitalized with Open Eyes electronic medical records. Zeiss Forum is used for imaging data management. Specialist ophthalmic operating theatres are provided in 2 day case theatres.
