Job summary

University Hospital Wales (UHW), Cardiff are excited to offer a 1 year, full time Fellowship in Emergency & Medico-Legal Medicine. This programme is for energetic, enthusiastic doctors of ST3/ST4+ or equivalent level in Emergency Medicine who wish to develop their Emergency Medicine skills working within a large MTC and their skills and knowledge within Medico-Legal Medicine.

The post is available from 30th May 2023 for 12 months.

The successful candidate would work at the MTC (University Hospital Wales, Cardiff) spending 70% of their time in hospital and 30% of their time dedicated to Medico-Legal Medicine. They will be joining a well-staffed and supportive hospital team that already contains 25 Consultants and 13 Registrars in Emergency Medicine.

For the Medico-Legal Component the Fellow will be spending their time both within the hospital received 1:1 tutorials and outside of the hospital spending time with a practising Medical Examiner, an Expert Witness in Emergency Medicine, Clinical Negligence Lawyers and within the Coronial Service. The last 5-10 years have seen an expansion of Medico-legal career opportunities for Medical Doctors including working as a Medico-Legal Advisors, Forensic Medical Examiners with the Police, Medical Examiners working within the Death Certification and Coronial service, Expert Witness work and Medical Members of first tier tribunals.

Main duties of the job

The purpose of the Medico-legal fellowship is to offer a 'one of a kind' opportunity for an Emergency Medicine Fellow to be immersed within the 'world' of Medico-Legal Medicine and the career opportunities that exist within in it.

In addition the Fellowship aims to promote and build on both the trainees' analytical skills and medico legal knowledge and support them with their studies towards gaining a Diploma in Legal Medicine from the FFLM Diploma.

The post offers an excellent opportunity to build both a portfolio and experiences in EM and Medico-legal Medicine, creating a unique skill set to offer as a Higher Trainee and EM Consultant.

Eligible candidates will be GMC registered doctors with at least 12 months experience of working in Emergency Medicine in the UK as a middle grade (i.e. able to lead a department at night with remote supervision) and a minimum of 4 years post graduate experience in specialities closely related to emergency medicine for instance Paediatric Emergency Medicine, Anaesthesia, Intensive Care Medicine and in Acute General Medicine. Selection of eligible candidates will be on the basis of an interview and presentation.
