Job summary
Applications are invited for the post of Breast Surgery Specialist Doctor within the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. This post is a replacement appointment, based in the Breast Centre at the University Hospital of Llandough (UHL). This is a fixed term post for 12 months with the possibility of making this post permanent.
The Breast service is part of the Trauma and Orthopaedics Directorate and is based in a purpose-built Breast Centre at University Hospital of Llandough. The centre was opened in 2010 and has dedicated out-patient clinics, diagnostic facilities, teaching facilities and office space for all members of the team.
The facilities are solely used by patients with breast problems. There is a large outpatient suite which contains 10 examination rooms, 3 mammography rooms and 2 rooms for Ultrasound examinations. There are rooms for the team to work from, whilst undertaking outpatient clinics, a central radiology reporting room, a treatment room, 2 counselling rooms and fitting room for breast prostheses.
The facilities are used to provide a diagnostic service for over 4,000 new referrals a year from General Practitioners in the Cardiff and Vale area and some tertiary referrals. In a two week period there are 240 appointments available for new patients, which are needed to meet the demand for clinical assessment.
Main duties of the job
The team treat > 400 new cases of breast cancer each year and provide follow up imaging and clinical support for these patients, with the help of a dedicated team of breast care nurses.
There is an opportunity to see and treat screen -detected patients from Breast test Wales. This is a tertiary referral centre and there is collaboration with plastic surgeons enabling oncoplastic clinics and surgery to be performed. In addition, we perform risk-reducing surgery for high risk genetics patients.
The primary focus of the post itself will be to gain more experience at staff grade level in Breast Surgery. The appointee will be expected to have a baseline level of surgical experience and as a team we are happy to support and develop those skills further.
Funding for a 10-session post has been obtained and will include appropriate SPA time and study leave agreed by clinical director.
Applicants should have previous experience of working as a specialty doctor or specialist trainee in breast surgery.
