Job summary
An exciting opportunity is available for GPs to join the prison healthcare team at HMP Cardiff. There is a total of seven sessions available from the end of January 2023 onwards. We will consider applications from one GP or a maximum of 3 GPs to take up these sessions. Although, we are offering these sessions on an initial fixed term 18- month basis, there is a potential that these sessions may be extended/made permanent in the future. A contribution into a rota for Saturday/Bank Holiday Reception Session is required as part of the contracted hours (max of 1 session per month/per staff member)

As a prison GP and working as part of a skilled and committed Multi-Disciplinary Team, you will be enthused by the real opportunity to make a difference to the men who will be accessing healthcare with a wide range of chronic mental and physical health problems, including substance misuse problems.
About the prison
HMP Cardiff is a category B remand prison, with an operational capacity of around 800 located in the centre of Cardiff, with good transport links.
Main duties of the job
Working as part of the Multidisciplinary Team, you will provide clinical assessment and diagnosis to patients that will inform their future management and care plans. You will have a chance to become actively involved in audit, teaching and training as well as the management of substance misuse, mental health and blood borne viruses and you will also have the opportunity to develop skills to provide a highly specialist resource to other healthcare staff. You will also be key to the further development of service to ensure we evolve to the changing needs of our patients.
You will need to be a registered GP, included on a Medical Performers List.
A background in one of the following areas would be advantageous; Communicable Diseases, Emergency Medicine,Minor Surgery, Psychiatry, Substance Misuse, Trauma and Orthopaedics. The RCGP Part 2 certificate in substance misuse would also be advantageous, however, if you are new to this field, youwill be fully supported to develop into this role through a period of induction and training.
