Academic Director (8c or Senior Academic/Clinical Tutor 8b) on The South Wales Doctoral Training Programme in Clinical Psychology: A honorary Cardiff University title is available (up to Professor depending on experience).
The South Wales Doctoral Training Programme in Clinical Psychology is seeking to appoint a part-time (0.6FTE) Academic Director (or Senior Academic/Clinical Tutor). The appointee will work within the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology hosted by Cardiff and Vale University Health Board and based at The School of Psychology at Cardiff University.Agenda for Change terms and conditions apply. The post holder would be eligible to apply for an honorary academic post commensurate with their CV and would be expected to secure status as an honorary Senior Lecturer, Reader, or in exceptional circumstances Professor.
The successful applicant will have a DClinPsy or equivalent and be registered with the HCPC as a Practitioner Psychologist. They will have a strong academic background and a clear track record of publication (or in the case of the Senior Tutor role clear research aptitude). Whilst this is a part-time post, and we would assist a successful candidate wishing to work full-time to find additional clinical sessions in one of our collaborating NHS Health Boards within South, Mid, or West Wales. Given the number of Health Boards we collaborate with there are likely to be sessions available in a number of different specialities.
Main duties of the job
The successful applicant will be joining an established and respected Clinical Psychology Doctorate.The programme has had recent changes in leadership and is keen to maintain and further enhance the academic aspects of the programme. This role involves close collaboration and partnership working with the Clinical Psychologists, Service Users and Carers, Academic Psychologists, and other stakeholders. If appointed at Director level the post holder would provide line management and supervision to other colleagues working within the 'academic stream'.
In the REF2014 rankings the School of Psychology at Cardiff University was ranked as 2nd in the UK. The school is home to a DEdPsy programme and a CBT course. The DClinPsy programme has recently gained secondary accreditation from the BABCP and AFT so that it is now able to confer level one CBT qualification and foundation level qualification in systemic practice to successfully completing trainees. The programme is keen to further develop trainees opportunities to develop neuropsychological competencies. We are also working to enhance training associated with combating racism and the development of cultural competency.

- To assume delegated responsibility for the systematic provision of a high quality Doctoral level Training Programme in Clinical Psychology for Mid, South and West Wales.
- To take lead responsibility within the designated area of training (academic) for proposing, organising and implementing long term strategic planning, policy, audit and development of clinical psychology training.
- To interpret national and regional policy regarding clinical psychology training within the designated area of training (academic).
- To ensure that training is in line with agreed objectives underpinned by the requirements of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), The British Psychological Society (BPS), and Cardiff University as validating body for the award of Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, and to establish how these objectives are interpreted and attained.
- To assist the therapies director in ensuring quality standards are maintained and records kept to support accreditation with the Association for Family Therapy and Systemic Practice (AFT), The British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP and to support high quality training in neuropsychology.
- To work autonomously within professional guidelines and exercise responsibility for the systematic governance of clinical psychology training within the designated area of training (academic).
- To provide leadership within the designated area of training (academic) of the Training Programme; to motivate staff and trainees.
- To establish and maintain procedures that facilitate and appraise the development of trainee competence within the designated area of training (academic) and hence to prepare trainees after qualification for work within modern health and social care services.
- To conduct autonomous teaching, research, development, academic and scholarship activity contributing to clinical psychology theory and practice, as a major job responsibility.
- To take responsibility within the designated area of training (academic) for professional pre qualification training across Mid, South, East and West Wales and contribute to clinical psychology training in the UK.
- To assume delegated responsibility for establishing and maintaining procedures that examine trainee competence development in accordance with Cardiff University regulations and procedures.
- To assume delegated responsibility for all Training Programme staff and trainees and associated resources and to ensure that systems are in place and working effectively for the supervision and support of Training Programme staff, including trainees.
- To assume delegated responsibility for ensuring clear systems for effecting recruitment, professional appraisal, and the identification of CPD needs within the Training Programme.
To provide a specialist clinical service, advice and consultancy to clients and professionals.
The programme is based close to the centre of Cardiff, and has close links with health boards in Mid, West, and South Wales. Cardiff is a vibrant University and capitol city. It has excellent rail, air, and road links to the rest of the UK and to the beautiful countryside and coastal areas of Wales.
