Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Locum Consultant in Transplant & Organ Retrieval Surgery based at University Hospital of Wales (UHW), Cardiff, available from mid-August for a period of 12 months.

The Transplant Unit at UHW is a leader in the field, performing approximately 110 adult transplants per year which includes compatible and incompatible living donors (approx 35 per year), deceased donors (donation after brainstem death and donation after circulatory death - approx. 60-70 per year), and pancreas transplants (approx 10 per year).

The unit has a stand-alone multi-organ retrieval team and is part of National Organ Retrieval Services (NORS), providing retrieval services nationally. The unit also provides access surgery and general surgical cover for the patients on the renal failure programme, as well as use of a number of general surgical lists leading to a wide and varied surgical exposure.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will be required to provide independent on-call service for the kidney transplant programme including all aspects of recipient assessment and listing, organ offer assessment, transplant procedure, peri-operative care, and post-operative outpatient follow-up. They will also be required to participate in NORS on-call rota as Lead abdominal surgeon, and perform primary and secondary vascular access procedures. With the support of Consultant colleagues, the post holder will be required to participate in pancreas transplant procedures.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is recognised as a teaching centre of excellence in a wide range of clinical services.

Although this post is full-time, consideration will be given to applicants who require flexible working arrangements.

Applicants should preferably either be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within three months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT / CESR(CP) at the time of interview.

You will be able to take advantage of the excellent Consultant contract for Wales. The basic salary for this post is £94,638 per annum.

Applicants who are currently or have recently been employed as a substantive or locum Consultant for more than 12 months must provide their Medical Director as an additional referee.
