Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for this Consultant post which combines all the principle sub-specialties of clinical pharmacology with an extensive general internal medicine practice and a selected acute medical intake.

The Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics (CPT) team is responsible for the management of up to 15 general medical in-patient beds, the management of in-patient poisoned patients, and provides specialist outpatient and in-patient reviews relating to adverse drug reactions, hypertension, therapeutics including prescription review, and toxicology.

You will be able to take advantage of the excellent Consultant contract for Wales. The basic salary range for this post is £86,063 per annum to £111,732 per annum plus a further £26,672 per annum available in Commitment Awards. Consultants in Wales paid on one of the first three points of the substantive Consultant pay scale also receive a Wales recruitment incentive payment.

Applicants must ensure they provide names and contact details of referees covering at least the last 3 years of their employment/training history in full. In addition, applicants who are currently or have most recently been employed as a substantive Consultant or as a Locum Consultant in post for more than 12 months must also provide the name of their Medical Director as an additional referee.

Main duties of the job

The CPT Consultants provide expertise to the All Wales Therapeutics & Toxicology Centre which provides advice to the Welsh Government and NHS Wales on access to medicines, medicines optimisation, health technology appraisal, patient safety, and pharmacovigilance.

The CPT team provide clinical leadership and expertise to the National Poisons Information Service (NPIS), a service commissioned by Public Health England. The NPIS provides healthcare professionals with accurate advice 24 hours a day throughout the year on the toxicity of substances and how to manage exposures to them. We have a telephone advice service and contribute to the continuing development of the internet database TOXBASE.

The CPT team is closely involved in academic work with Cardiff University, Cardiff Metropolitan University, and University of South Wales. There are opportunities to be involved in clinical trials, basic and clinical research, hypertension research, and the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduates.

Although this post is full-time, consideration will be given to applicants who require flexible working arrangements.
