Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for suitably qualified Genetic Technologists to join the All Wales Medical Genomics Service working flexibly for 37.5 hours per week. These are permanent, full-time posts (working flexibly for 37.5 hours per week) currently based at University Hospital of Wales - however, please note that we will be relocating to a new facility at Cardiff Edge in 2023. The post holder will be working within the laboratory teams/ subsections, working to support a range of patients requiring cancer, prenatal and rare disease testing.

Thepost holder will perform routine genetic testing and analyses as directed by the Section Lead, responsible Clinical Scientist, or Lead Genetic Technologist. Other routine laboratory tasks may be allocated as necessary.

The All Wales Medical Genetics Service (AWMGS) provides a comprehensive clinical genetics and laboratory service clinical genetics services to the 3 million residents of Wales.

Welsh Government and the Welsh Health Specialised Services Committee are investing in the All Wales Medical Genomics Service to ensure patient equity across the UK in accessing genetic testing methodologies. The investment has seen a £10 million investment over a 3 year period to ensure AWMGS stays in the forefront of genomic medicine and develops the best diagnostic genetic services for patients. The Directorate encourages personal development and you will be expected to take an active part in the appraisal process. Not only is this a busy and challenging specialty but you would also be joining a friendly, dedicated team in Medical Genetics.

Qualifications

Essential

• BSc Hons in Biological / Medical Science (or equivalent)

Desirable

• Enrollment on Voluntary Health Professions Council Register for genetic technologists

Experience

Essential

• Sufficient experience in a laboratory

Desirable

• Evidence of professional development

Skills

Essential

• Basic knowledge of genetics including role of DNA and Chromosomes.
• Knowledge of laboratory work including need for attention to detail and record
• Highly developed laboratory skills for precise micro-manipulation of clinical samples

Special Knowledge

Essential

• Ability to work well with colleagues at all levels
